Massachusetts was very involved in the war. It was one of the first states to respond to the Civil war. “When the president called for troops, Massachusetts responded admirably, providing some of the Union’s famous units.”

A lot of different laws/acts passed such as the Kansas-Nebraska Act during that time and Massachusetts was affected by it. Also a variety of different events happened that lead to the outbreak of the civil war, “four soldiers and twelve locals were killed, and many more wounded, in what were the first casualties of the Civil War.”

John Albion Andrews was a governor of Massachusetts. He opposed the extension of slavery into the western territories. Also, he called for an all black troop to be raised, which was organized as the 54th Regiment, becoming the first unit of its kind.

The unit of soldiers

The 54th Massachusetts Infantry that was organized during the Civil War. More than 1,000 men volunteered that were from other states such as Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Canada. There were 1,007 Black soldiers and 37 white officers. These soldiers and officers were determined to end slavery which was the reason of war. It was the second all-Black Union regiment to fight in the war. Their officer Robert Gould Shaw who was only 25 years old had been injured in the battle.

Clara Barton

Clara Barton was a teacher, nurse, patent clerk and humanitarian. She found the American Red Cross and during summer of 1861, she began purchasing and distributing supplies to wounded soldiers in Washington due to a small amount of food and medicine left in the Union Army. She was helping the wounded soldiers at the battlefield and was known as the "Angel of the Battlefield."
