- purpose: to cut the design into parts precisely without reworking
- how it work:

The graphic is design in a vector program -> send to a laser cutter via computer in print command.
The laser cutter trace the vector lines to cut out the design
if the laser impinges the materials with low power, only one layer is removed (engraved) >< if the laser power is increased, the laser beam will cut-through the material

1) Use vector program ( Ai, Inkscape, vectornator, etc.)
2)Works in mm or cm -> most laser cutter use metric measurements
3) make sure the design fit the laser bed
4) decide type of cuts: normal cut = cut through the material, kiss cutting = 1 line touch the surface to make the design pretty, engraving/itching

5) if there are texts -> create outlines
6) use a different colours for 3 types of cuts if use

- Extract three basic shapes to be used as building blocks in more complex motif and pattern work.
- These three basic shapes may then be integrated with squares, circles and triangles in order to create more complex visual motifs.
- Include a lot of process work, development of forms, visual variations on basic forms, utilisation of grids, research of logo designs, etc.

I was responsible for putting our design ideas on mock up, pdf printing files and ai files for laser cut. Although I was not the one who physically went out and see the printing/laser cutting process, my group members gave me lots of tips and I too understand how a laser cut ai file should be designed.

1. Burnt marks

It is unavoidable to have burnt marks on materials. From the research I figured that a layer of thin sheet should be placed on top/underneath the print board.

1. Restart - visual research

I decided to iconised a seal with a different pose. A pose that is more iconic, more recognisable for a person who does not know what a seal looks like. The seal "banana pose" is exactly that.
Seals does banana pose - lifting up its head and tail, creating a banana shape upside curve - when they are happy and comfortable.

2. Sketching

I sketched the real seal reference with pencil and paper to see the main features of it. Then, the seals parts are broken down into ovals and triangles. Based on the research on how to use golden ratio to improve logo design, I refined the seal by integrated different sizes circles and ovals. At this point, I still hesitate whether to keep the face features but the overall combination of shapes looked good enough for me so I moved on the next step.

3. Refined on Ai (pt. 1)

I traced exactly like the most completed sketch (but left out the face feature). After traced it on black background, I inverted it to a black logo on white background. Once I found the errors, I fixed it again on black background, inverted and repeat this process until I found a good version.

- One of the version has potential to be a logo (overall better than last attempt)
- (abstract logo) avoid sharp thin ends -> cut and refine them
- (full body logo) use thicker stroke (5pt for the size I have shown him)
- Keep 2 versions, one with the stroke and an abstract one and develop further.

I realised more errors which are from the shape building process. Those tiny extras cut outs make the editing process so difficult and time consuming. => Have to be more precise on building stage => start again with building stage

Many brand identity mock ups uses combination mark logos and so I thought it is essential to make a typeface for easier application purpose. Also, to see how the logo design is good enough for a number of fonts.

The initial design have lines that are too close together and small-> the laser cutting man have to add stroke to my design -> thick spaces in between holes = more stable but small holes become even smaller

- Masking: For engraving, be aware that smoke during the etching process can stain the edges of the engraved surface ->cover the surface with masking tape to protect it. The tape won't reduce the laser's power much (increase needed).
- Presets: should have several recommended settings for cutting or engraving different materials and different thicknesses-> load these settings into a computer or laser and save them as presets.
- Trial Cut
- layers:

place the different sections you design on different layers in one file. Most graphics programs allow you to create different layers and then turn them on and off.
Cut order control: place different cuts on separate layers to pop and cut each layer in the order you want.

There are multiple sections and designs in one file. Instead of having a separate file for each design, just put them all in one file and place them on individual layers. Then just print each layer one by one. Helps keep things in order.
Create instructions. You may need to create some guidelines to present your design, or you may need a target to place an object on. If you don't want these printed, put them on their own layer and disable printing that layer.
