In November of 1835, a meeting was held with all Catholics living north of Calhoun street in consideration of a new church. Over a few years, funds were raised and on St. Patrick’s Day 1838, work began. By the end of December the same year, the church was ready for service. Unfortunately, the parish went bankrupt during the civil war. Although, in 1884, Reverend Daniel J. Quigley “saw a need for a larger church and purchased land on the grounds of St. Phillip and Radcliff” (St. Patrick Charleston). By December 12, 1886, Mass was able to be held in the basement of the church. On May 15, 1887, St. Patrick was consecrated and by 1899, all work became completed. Monsignor Quigley passed away in November of 1903 and “is buried in one ofo the tombs in front of the church” (St. Patrick Charleston).
The parish’s population significantly declined to be almost half the size it originally was. Many members had moved on to different parts of Charleston, ultimately causing a decline in membership and finance for the church. Although, September 22, 1967, two nearby predominantly African American churches were closed. These churches were known as Immaculate Conception and St. Peters. The members of these churches merged in with St. Patrick. Reverend Philip Haggerty was put in charge and he combined leadership with William Headley and William Joyce as assistant priests. St. Patrick ultimately began to prosper. The nextdoor building collapsed due to a tree falling on it in 1970, and this area now serves as a parking area for church goers.
In 1978, Reverend Egbert became “the first black priest to serve in the Charleston area” (St. Patrick Charleston). Overtime, current members learned about the “heritage they shared with White parishioners who populated the congregation before their 1967 merger” (St. Patrick Charleston).
