I have a phone app that awards badges, and you can see the badge name and criteria but not the badge itself. It's grayed out. Right now, my badges are "hidden until awarded" because I want them to be a surprise. I'm wondering if these badges would be a more powerful incentive if the could be seen but not really seen BEFORE they're awarded...
