This guided tour will elaborate on two topics within the Rijksmuseum: the colours of Cuypers and the lacquer room with the Van Mekeren cabinets.

The Rijksmuseum is designed by Pierre Cuypers (1827 - 1921) as a symbol for the arts of the Netherlands at the end of the nineteenth century. The interior decoration of the central axis of the museum, consisting of the Front Hall, the Gallery of Honour, and the Nightwatch room, was completed in 1910. The painting on canvas by the Austrian artist George Strum. The interior reflects Cuypers' vision on the theme 'Temple of Arts'. Evolution in tastes and the growth of the museum collections resulted in alterations and overpaintings. In 2001, a preliminary research project began to uncover and study the original colour through examinations of stratigraphies, windows, and areas that were left untouched over the years. This laid the foundation for a comprehensive restoration and conservation effort. During the tour, specialists Katherine Kolff, Claudia Junge, and Nico van der Woude will elaborate on the different stages of this multidisciplinary project.

The other half of the tour, led by specialists Iskander Breebaart and Jan Dorscheid, focuses on the finishes of the lacquer room and the Van Mekeren cabinets. The lacquer dates back to the late seventeenth century and was originally part of the apartment of the consort of the Frisian stadholder. Princess Albertine Agnes of Orange and Nassau. The walls are mounted with exquisite Chinese screens of Coromandel lacquer. The van Mekeren cabinets, crafted by Jan van Mekeren, a prominent Amsterdam cabinetmaker of the seventeenth century, are renowned for their floral marquetry.
