Odysseyus, a great or flawed leader? by Drenay Everett

Do Odysseus’s flaws: his pride, his ego, selfishness, and infidelities make him a bad leader, or do his great qualities outweigh his weaknesses? Can you provide evidence and proof of your stance? What's your own opinion? Write a response of 5-7 sentences. Then find another classmate to respond to. Respond with at least 2-3 sentences. You can agree, disagree, have a rebuttal, ask a question in response. Respond to someone who does NOT have a response.

I believe someone can be a great leader and still have poor qualities. Having flaws is the nature of being a human, so we couldn't expect Odysseus to be perfect. However......I do still believe that many of his flaws kept him further along at sea. One of his biggest flaws was the easily tempted nature. I believe cheating is a sign of weakness and a lack of discipline in a person. While this is true, I believe he may be known as a good leader, but not a great leader.

Odysseus is a great leader. He may have a huge pride, an unbeatable ego, or maybe even a little hint of selfishness. With all these "flaws" he still managed to keep his men alive for 15 or so years. The only reason they died after all that time is because of a literal sea monster. His men loved him through all of their hardship and challenges. Even after they somewhat betrayed him, he still tried to take them from the island and save them. He was so loved by his kingdom that they waited 18 years hoping he would one day come back. Would you wait that long for a man that you don't like? This shows that you could have a few flaws and still be an amazing leader. Odysseus, is an amazing leader.

I somewhat think that his flaws make him a bad leader because although I get that he wanted to return home after everything he’s done, he still let all of his men die in order for him to make it back home. Even during his journey, he seduced two different woman while he had a whole wife and a kid who were waiting for his return. Thought the film, i rarely saw him worry about his men and their feelings. He was self-absorbed in some way.

I feel like he isn’t a good leader. The reason I feel like he isn’t a good leader is cause, his selfishness. Cause of him being worried about himself he put his men in danger causing most if not all of them to die. Odysseus is also a good leader in different categories, he is clever using his brain to get out of unusual situations, he also is caring he wants to get all his men home but his men disobey him causing them to be pushed from shore. Odysseus remained calm through tuff situations keeping composure was his biggest trait as a leader to me even though he wasn’t the best leader.

He tried to get him and his men home he tried all that he could. he gave the best leadership that he could have given in that time. he did what he could when things got rought. he stuck with them when they went behind his back and opened the bag.

Odysseus is a learning adventurer and a very flawed leader. He has a huge ego but a strong mind. He lost all of his men on the way back, yet those are the men who prolonged his trip. He would’ve made it home before his mother died to grief but his men opened a bag of wind, thinking it was treasure, in which, tore his ship apart. He then spent many more years away before returning back to his kingdom as an old man. He very skillfully proved it was him and was turned back to normal without dying. He had bounced back multiple times and he feels shame. That is leader-worthy.

I believe that Odysseus makes a great leader, as much as he is flawed. He makes a good leader, and his bad qualities are outweighed by the good ones. Even though he may be selfish, or have a lot of ego. He is also very loyal, and courageous. Determined as well, his great qualities are what make him a good leader. For example, when it comes to loyalty, many will say that he is not loyal. Because of the past encounters with Calypso, and the other goddess you may think he’s not loyal. But, he only did that for the sake of others and himself. Not because that’s what he desired to do. He did it, just so he could get back to Ithaca, for his wife and son. Also, he didn’t betray his crew members and abandon them while going to near death experiences. Instead of trying to save himself, he attempted at saving the other crew members. This and many other qualities that he has, is what makes him a good leader.

I think Odysseus's flaws outweigh his qualities. He does have a bunch of things that make him a great leader like his strategies for battle, and his perseverance through what Poseidon put him through for him to return to Ithaca. However, all of this could've been prevented if he gave thanks to Poseidon instead of being selfish and taking the credit for himself. Not only does this cause a problem for his leadership, but also his poor choices throughout his journey as well. For instance we can consider his ignorance. He always trusted his men, even after Athena warned him about them, but he decided to ignore Athena's warning. Due to his ignorance he always trusted his men which led to them opening the air Aeolus gave to Odysseus, causing them to take an even longer time to get to Ithaca. Not only that, but because of his men's actions it also caused most if not all of his men to die as well. He isn't fit for the job, not for the way he acts.

Odysseus showed many times that he is a good leader by helping his leading his men against Troy in the Trojan war, then coming up with a plan to trick Troy and defeat them in war. While his pride does get in the way sometimes, his leader feats out ways his problems. And he is willing to do anything for his men survival.

Odysseus' leadership was mostly acknowledged and praised at the start when he was sailing off to attend the Trojan war. As time went on, Odysseus mocked Poseidon, which caused him to curse the seas to compromise his trip back to his homeland, Ithaca. This is a flaw because it shows that Odysseus likes to put himself in front of others cause of his ego. Another flaw for Odysseus is his disloyalty to Penelope and his son, Telemachus, by seducing two witches/goddesses. Rounding my opinion up, I think Odysseus is a FLAWED LEADER.

He sometimes let his pride and ego take over, and he didn’t always think about how his actions affected his crew. Still, he was smart, brave, and determined. He came up with clever plans to get through dangerous situations, like when he avoided being trapped by the Sirens. He also never gave up on returning home, even when the journey took years. A true leader keeps going no matter how hard things get, and Odysseus did exactly that. His loyalty and courage made him a strong and inspiring leader, even with his flaws.

In my opinion I feel that Odysseus was a great leader and here's why. When being a leader you are expected to to know what to do. Odysseus often risked his life for his men. This showed his ego and confidence towards him. He also tried his hardest to safe his men as they faced 2 sea monster. In major situations he's often calm and doesn't freak out.

I agree that Odysseus was smart but I think he let his pride get in the way too much In the movie every time he bragged or thought only of himself his men ended up paying the price To me a great leader should protect his crew first.

I feel that Odysseus is a flawed leader because of his hypocritical actions.Odysseus has done many negative things that can not be overlooked by his positive traits. He cheats on his wife, Penelope, but seeks revenge when other men attempt to date her. He also disrespects the gods, even though the loyalty and respect of Athena is instilled in his people. Yes, Odysseus was a great leader, but his ego and pride has a major negative impact.

I think the Odysseus was a good leader, but he wasn't the greatest. He has done many things that made his leaders ship a succus but he also done stuff that has made harm to his crew, for example, he saved his team from the cyclops, but Odysseus also claimed that he was stronger and better than the gods, which made the gods upset which led to the gods extending Odysseus time at sea. Odysseus weakness was his arranges. His arranges was his downfall in my personal opinion. But his strength was his bravery. He showed his bravery by leading the Trojan War, Fighting the children of Poseidon.
