         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Slide #2</em></strong><br>Mouth, teeth, and salivary glands = When the pizza enters the mouth it is entering the first stage which is the ingestion stage. This is where the pizza is chewed up into smaller pieces and broken down by the teeth and the salivary glands so that it is easy to swallow. The teeth of course are basically the big machine that chomp the food down into smaller morsels. The salivary glands keep the mouth moist which helps break down the food particles as well as the carbohydrates in the pizza. Now the pizza is ready to be swallowed. The cool thing here is that when the salivary glands break down the food it creates something called salivary amylase which begins the digestive process by breaking down the food. It then converts it into smaller carbohydrates so that it can be digested. That's the enzyme being produced here.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Digestion</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Slide #3</em></strong><br>Pharynx = Once the food is broken down by the salivary glands and the salivary amylase now the food can be swallowed and that's how it ends up here in the pharynx. This is basically the throat area which the food goes down towards the esophagus.&nbsp;<br>Esophagus = The esophagus is a long muscular tube that connects the pharynx (throat) to the stomach. Here the pizza moves down the esophagus making it's way to the liver and the stomach.<br>Liver = From the esophagus the pizza moves to the liver where the enzyme activity starts forming and the pizza is further broken down so that it can be digested properly. This is done by certain enzymes one of which is known as the bile salt enzyme.<br>Stomach = Here is where the first enzymes are produced. These enzymes come from hci which is created to prevent harmful bacteria from entering. The enzymes being formed here are pepsin, pepsinogen, mucus, lipase etc. Their main function here is to keep breaking down the pizza into the smallest possible particles and to make sure that they get all the nutrients needed for the body from that pizza, this is essential for digestion.<br>Pancreas = This is where the next enzymes come into play and this is gastrin, bicarbonate ions, secreting enzymes (formed from pepsin), erepsin, and cholecystokinin. All these enzymes are formed here in the pancreas and some are formed from the stomach enzymes such as secreting coming from pepsin etc. In the pancreas the nutrients from the pizza are taken and formed into fuel for the body. This is done by the different enzymes in the pancreas. This process regulates blood sugar.<br>Gall bladder = In the gall bladder a yellowish liquid is formed which is a digestive enzyme (produced by the liver). It drains waste products from the liver to the duodenum.<br>Small intestine = The main function here is for the small intestine to take the nutrients and the minerals from the pizza and absorbing them.<br>Duodenum = This is where the next enzymes come into play. They are the enterokinase enzymes, trypsin and trypsinogen. The duodenum receives partially digested foods (pizza) known as the chyme and they digest it (chemical process). This makes it easier to prepare it for absorption. Many of the enzymes from the pancreas, liver and the gall bladder mix with the chyme in the duodenum to help make this chemical digestion possible.<br>Jejunum = This is the middle of the small intestine and this is where the nutrients from the pizza are absorbed and passed on to the ileum for further absorption.<br>Ileum = This is where bile salts and whatever was not absorbed by the jejunum are finally absorbed.<br>Large Intestine = This is where the food is converted to feces. This is also where the chyme (from the small intestine) goes out.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>Slide #5</em></strong><br>Rectum = This is the last step where feces are taken out. This is where indigestible food such as sodium, potassium and chloride are decomposed by anaerobic bacteria. The stool is also thickened by water absorption and mixed with mucus.<br>Anus = This is the last part where all the waste that was decomposed by the rectum is now finally let out for good. This is known as the end of the digestion process and this is where it ends.</div>]]></description>
