It allowed people to do more, connect more and trade more. It caused the nationalisation of time around the world, in America and Britain this can be seen. A great example of this was the trans continental railroad in the United States, we it has been estimated that around 90% of the workforce were underpaid Chinese immigrants (so called Coolie).
