The improvements to the railroads, especially in Great Britain and America changed the speed that people could move around. It allowed people to do more, connect more and trade more. It caused the nationalisation of time around the world, in America and Britain this can be seen. Being able to move around much faster led to people being able to see outside of the there towns or cities and see a larger vision of the world, and this led to a more global approach to everything.

The increase in size and scale of many infrastructure projects around the world, led to the exploitation of many workers, be it indigenous or immigrants. A great example of this was the trans continental railroad in the United States, we it has been estimated that around 90% of the workforce were underpaid Chinese immigrants (so called Coolie). This led to more of a focus on global politics, in labour laws (such as the US bill banning the trade of "Coolie's"), as well as a western anti-Asian sentiment.
