He wove into the expose style writing of the happenings into a story of Jurgis and his family from Lithuania. Although, this part of the story was not based on an actual family from Lithuania, it is very close to the truth and describes in detail what many immigrating families experienced in that part of the United States. According to Upton Sinclair the goal of the book was to expose the slave wages the lower levels of the United States economy endured.
