The Ancient Egyptians were polytheistic, which meant they worshiped more than one god. There were many Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses, like Ra and Thoth. They believed that each god was in control of something different. For example, the god Sobek was the god of the Nile River. He controlled when it flooded, and the people needed flood because it helped make the soil good for growing crops in. The people tried to always keep the gods happy, because if they were unhappy, they believed bad fortune would come to Egypt.

In Ancient Egypt, rituals and festivals were held for religious purposes. Some may be dedicate to a certain god or goddess, while others may be towards the Pharaoh or King. One example of a ritual is the sacred foundation building of a new temple. The King or Pharaoh puts up two posts to show where the new temple would be built. Then, a whole is dug to water level to make the foundation sturdy. Then bricks are put into the corners and sand is poured in as the foundation. Next comes the plaques, which are made of many fine materials such as gold, silver, stone, and copper. After that, a temple is ready to be constructed.

In Ancient Egypt, Priests fall just beneath the Pharaoh on the social class pyramid. So when the Pharaoh did not want to maintain the body of the gods, the responsibility got passed down to the Priests. They have many responsibilities to maintain while in this line of work. They had to feed the gods, perform religious ceremonies on them, and help with the statues representing the gods. They also had to go through a daily purification process. They had to shave off all the hair from their bodies, including eyebrows and eyelashes, and had to take a bath in a temple lake twice a day. Being an Ancient Egyptian Priest was difficult work.

In Ancient Egypt, the peoples' lives were heavily influenced by their religion. It affected their points of view on death; they believed that, if the mummification process was done properly, they would be sent to live in the afterlife. It influenced their architecture because they built temples for the gods, and the temples were where the Priests worked, so if also influenced their line of work. Some of the things they believed inspired them to write myths about them, such as The Contendings of Horus and The Destruction of Mankind.
