Student engagement starts at home. We can fuel engagement, but cannot physically make a student get out a laptop if they are at home, no matter how exciting our lesson is. If I could build a platform for student engagement, it would look like a collection of responsibilities and accountability. Teachers are doing their part and are held accountable, but what about everyone else involved in that child's life? After all, if the district is worried about attendance and passing rates (because of money) then they should be willing to spend money to hold guardians accountable through mentorships as well as mental and behavioral health services.

If I could design a platform for student use, it would have everything in ONE place. And, the platform would stay consistent for the whole year. It would be equally and reliably functional from home and school.

Students could engage asynchronously - perhaps using things such as class specific discussion boards that are only visible once you have made an initial post. We currently have some great tools at our disposal - the challenge, as I see it, is to utilize them in a way that is seamless for the students and the teachers - does not require separate passwords, or inconsistent dependence on google vs Microsoft single sign-in, separate grading systems nor multiple platform integration.

Consistency and Simplicity are boring but highly underrated.

The one piece that I keep returning to in my mind is connection but it's more related to being able to talk to and with each other and I feel like that is the one piece that we and the students are missing the most. Some of my best students, last year, are not interacting at all this year. I wish there was an option to require at least one live class discussion per week per class but I understand why we cannot.
