At first they didn’t use a pole; it was actually a tree instead. When the dancers in Germany performed the Maypole dance on the first day of May but since the dance got more popular people in Sweden started performing it in midsummer celebration. The second Maypole dance started in the 18th Century and quickly became a popular traditional or creative dance in Italy and France. The pole was traditionally made from the trunk of a fir tree but depending on the tradition the tree can be oak or others pine however, the most important aspects of the tree are the height and the length. Instead of using a tree you can use a flagpole if the dance takes place indoors. The ribbons need to be twice as long as the pole also has to be two or three inches wide and you need enough to have two equal numbers for the two colors of ribbon.
The color of the ribbon representations :
  • Red - God 
  • White - Virgin Goddess
  • Green - Forest 
  • Gold - Sun 
  • Purple - Grapes and wine
  • Rainbow - Zodiac signs
  • Other - A blessing the dancers wished for

  • Malta - They introduced Maypole dance to their Maltese Carnival in 1721.  
  • United States - In 1628, William Bradford wrote of an incident where a number of servants decided to break free from their indentured services to create their own colony and they set up a Maypole dance in the center of the settlement.
  • Canada - They have been doing Maypole dance to celebrate Mayday for 149 years now.
  • Jamaica - During their independence  day celebrations in 1962, 63 villages agreed to have Maypole dancing as a part of their celebrations.
