In the south, everything was segregated, including busses. The whites rode in the front, and the colored people rode in the back. Because of this discrimination members of the SNCC hatched a plan to start a boycott.

February 1960 Sit-in protest - movement begins at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. and spreads to the nation.

Because of this, more sit-ins start to happen, and TV crews start to get involved. Wears the country could have never seen what happened at these sit-ins, they could now. The public was outraged, and it left people with the scene that they really could change America by just sitting down.

April 3 - May 10 1963 - Police arrest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other ministers demonstrating in Birmingham Alabama and then turn fire hoses and police dogs on the marchers

TV crews attended this horrible event, and the whole world was watching this time. The public outcry was even louder than that of the Greensboro campaign, and what the people want, they will eventually get. It pushed the civil rights act to the brink of happening.

This speech, and ultimately the March on Washington were the critical point to get A civil rights act. It was what thoroughly convinced most Americans, and without it we might have had to wait years more.

July 2, 1964 - President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964

For moderate segregated states, they become desegregated, but work still needs to be done to get the deep south to comply. Now every court case against segregation would be backed up with an act from the government.

February 21, 1965 - Civil Rights leader Malcolm X is murdered

Malcolm X was a very radical thinker when it came to the matter of civil rights. He thought that equal rights should be achieved by any means necessary, even if that means using violence. So, an even bigger target was put on his head, because more people feared his ideology.

August 6, 1965 - President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965 banning prerequisite to voting such as fees and literacy tests

Now, African Americans can vote for what they want, which is going to be people that make it fairer for them. This means that the black community states getting some representation in the lower levels, which could never have been possible before. Only very recently have we been seeing seeing their representation in the upper levels.

His death and memory are still commemorated to this day, with MLK day. Because of him, we are closer than ever to having equality for all. Also because of him, we have one extra day off of school. Thanks Martin Luther King.
