Our story of Robin Hood & Maid Marian begins when they were children. Noble by birth, the young Robin and
Marian were friends and constant companions from their earliest ages. At a time of peace in the land surrounding
Nottingham, under the rule of King Henry, Robin, Marian and the children of the town spent many happy hours
wandering the forest and meadows of Sherwood among indigenous flora and fauna. However, as time passed,
King Richard would succeed King Henry and eventually leave his native land to participate in the Crusades
overseas. With Richard away, his scheming evil sister Princess Johanna would form a vile partnership with the
Sheriff of Nottingham and proceed to rob, frighten and harass the residents of Nottingham in the name of “ransom”
for King Richard who was being held captive in a foreign land.
Robin, who was now grown, living in Sherwood Forest as a result of the loss of his father and inheritance, began to
gather a “band of Merries” to fight for justice for the people of Nottingham and a resultant group of forest orphans
forced to fend for themselves living in the woods of Sherwood. With his “merries”, Devon and Gytha, by his side,
he encounters a new forest resident, Joan Little, at a stream crossing. Clearly mighty and boasting of extraordinary
quarter staff skills, the two battle with each other for rights to the crossing. With the revelation of the equality of
their finesse and strength and the recognition of Joan’s mighty sense of humor, Robin invites this worthy opponent
to join their “band of Merries” and renames her Little Joan. Leaving the scene of the crossing the band comes
across young Willow who has killed one of the Princess’ deer. Arriving upon the scene, the gruff and cruel Sheriff
of Nottingham seeks to arrest young Willow for the deed, but Robin takes the blame for the event, saving young
hunter and scaring the Sheriff and his Deputy out of the forest. Knowing that he now has an even heftier price on
his head, Robin takes the deer to the Princess’ castle as a gift for dinner. Once there, Robin recognizes Maid
Marian, his beloved childhood friend who is visiting the Princess, her cousin.
With Marian’s presence at forefront of his mind, Robin escapes the castle and heads back to the forest stopping
with the Merries to witness the silly dancing of Friar Tuck. An excellent bowman, the Friar is at first leery of Robin
Hood, given his reputation and threatens to “pierce them through”! However, the Friar weighs the options and
decides the “band” needs ministering and joins the green-clad gang.
With birds brightly singing in Sherwood Forest, Robin and the Merries set up to help the poor by robbing the
Princess’ caravan that is scheduled to proceed through the Forest after collecting oppressive taxes in the nearby
village, leaving the villagers starving. Ambushing the caravan, Robin invites them to join the Forest Family for
dinner to show their hospitality. With Maid Marian present in the caravan, Robin sees the opportunity to take the
gold collected by the Sheriff stating that he would make sure to deliver the “ransom” for King Richard with Maid
Marian who is the King’s cousin. Without being able to argue the fact in front of Marian and fearing for their safety,
the Princess, Sheriff, and Deputy leave the Forest. Having exposed the Princess’ lie about the bounty to Marian,
Robin then takes her into the woods to show her the plight of the Forest Orphans. Deep within the forest’s beauty,
Robin and Marian rediscover their friendship and deep love begins to grow. He sends her safely back to the castle
through the lovely boreal flowers of Sherwood.
In an effort to capture Robin Hood, the Sheriff suggests an archery competition to lure him to Nottingham. With the
Princess and Marian in attendance, Robin and the band of Merries arrive at the competition in disguise. With their
deft skills and steely precise arrows, the band dazzle the spectators and Robin wins the golden arrow. Revealing
his true identity, the Sheriff arrests him and the Princess sentences him to hang. However, his trusty Merries
rescue him and they all escape to the safety of the forest.
Act II opens with Maid Marian longing for her true love, Robin and confides in her cousins Beatrice and Matilda who
are happy for her but fear for her safety. In the meantime, the Sheriff and Deputy have seen King Richard in
disguise in an Inn near Nottingham. While they are meeting with Princess Johanna to tell her of the discovery and
their grand plan to kill Richard and coronate Johanna as the ruler of England, Marian overhears. She quickly
sends her cousins to warn Robin and the Merries but ultimately is arrested by Johanna and the Sheriff.
Robin Hood with this knowledge plans an ambush at the coronation and the ultimate unveiling of Richard in his
triumphant return. Banishing Johanna, the Sheriff, and the Deputy forever from England, Richard knights Robin
and calls for his marriage to Richard’s lovely cousin, the Maid Marian. All the citizens of Nottingham and Sherwood
Forest gather in a clearing among the flora and fauna to rejoice in the return of their sovereign and celebrate the
marriage of their hero Robin Hood to his beloved Maid Marian.
