 4 years later, Harry is called in by his boss while on vacation to investigate readings from the long dormant Dante's Peak volcano that could mean it is once again active.Unfortunately, there is a town nestled right up close to it.Which has just been voted the second best place to live in.Which means that the town's economic future depends on tourism/investment/no scaremongering/e.t.c.. Which can actually happen, so the town won't want to hear the truth. The Mayor accepts the award and her children are introduced.Harry introduces himself to the Mayor and her family and asks to talk,but first they pick up  
Graham, a troubled kid who - is not a good boy. He was SNEAKING INTO AN ABANDONED MINE.   They drop the kids off at their grandmother Ruth's house but Ruth takes them out to the Hot Springs. Harry and the mayor go along. A bunch of dead squirrels are found. Graham is narrowly saved from being hurt by the lava - Harry sees another couple who were killed by the lava floating upside down. Harry calls his boss and says there are certain signs the volcano is becoming active again. Carbon Dioxide is killing wildlife and plants. It is escaping due to the activity beneath the earth surface. Also due to the same activity, lava is escaping to the surface via alternative channels like the hot springs. Harry attempts to put the town on alert, to prepare for a possible evacuation. The town does not want to do an evacuation which would discourage possible business investments. Harry's boss advises caution since it may not erupt. Volcanoes are unpredictable - this is a real life fact.
