Swift is Sharp's smaller brother. Yet, Swift is faster than Sharp and it gets to his head a little. Sharp pushes, bites, and claws Swift to prove to their dad the Alpha he can be the next alpha. However the dad does not take that behavior and asks Swift to hunt and explore with him. This infuriates Sharp. So, whenever the enemy wolves attack Sharps joins them. In the end swift ignores the fact that by blood they are brothers and live life with out him.

Swift was an excellent runner, he was good at hunting, and he was a great size. One day the enemy wolf pack attacked. So, he brought it upon himself to save the pups. He led many of the enemy pack away by letting out a brief, weak howl. They chased him so far out in the woods, he got lost. His desire to find his family never grew weary. He spent many days and nights searching for his family. He traveled far, high, and low. During his search, he saw another wolf, female, white, and strong, It was love at first sight. As a result of him going on this journey he became stronger. He was ready to have a pack of his own. Even though he never found his family, he started a new one.

Swift has a journey to find his family. However, during the fight that separated him from his family, his dad the Alpha was attacked by many enemy wolves and died. Swift struggles with getting over this and drags his grief along during his journey.

"I spring up and run for my home ground. I will find him, and the pups too. I will save them all. The ground rises. I keep searching.....I keep going. Hoping that Warm found a way to slip by the enemy pack, hoping Mother and the pups found a place to hide" (Parry). This quote is significant because it shows his love for his family and also helps us understand how he feels and why he hunts, runs, and searches for endless days.

Many people believe that if something doesn't go as planned it would ruin their day or life, but that isn't always the case. In the story Swift didn't grow up fully with his family because he got lost. However this challenge made him strong, strong enough to become an alpha. He also met a female wolf night. This would not have happened if his life went as planned or he never found any challenges along the way.

The howl of a Wolf symbolizes many things like life and happiness. The author uses it many times throughout the book. Whenever Swift is overwhelmed by joy he howls to the sky. Whenever he is alerting his pack he survived the attack of enemy wolf, he howls.

The claw scratches on a tree symbolizes territory/home. Whenever the enemy wolves take over Swift's pack they scratch the tree to show that they are taking the land and the elk that lives on it. In other words they tell Swifts pack this is their territory now.

The den symbolizes family the author includes when, Swift is born with many pups. Also when he gets pups of his own at the end of the book. He has a family so he had a den. He has a den so he has a family.
