His father died of disease and he is adopted by his foster father, Jongintaba. He goes to a new school, started by missionaries, and gets a new, western name, Nelson Mandela. When Nelson grew older, his father, Jongintaba, told him he had to get married, but he doesn't want to, so he runs away to Johannesburg. But eventually, Jongintabas men found him, but he convinced his father to let him stay and study. When he graduates, he joins the ANC(African National Congress). After fighting against apartheid, he spent a total of 27 yrs in prison. He was divorced twice while he was in prison. When he got out, he ran for president of South Africa.
