It was because of these social variations, different levels of obedience, conformity, altruism and aggression that are all witnessed that this film was chosen. Conformity, which was experimented with by Solomon Asch, is where ones thoughts or feelings are adjusted to suit that of the rest of the group. In his experiment, all bar one participant was aware of the happenings and were to state an opinion on an image on the board (see ‘Asch’s experiment). He discovered that without an ally present (someone to agree with), one felt pressured to submit to others opinions. Because the ‘Breakfast Club’ all shared a common fate (detention), goal (finishing detention) and enemy (Richard Vernon) the feeling would have been strong. Aggression is seen at many points of the film, some being:
  • John and Andrew physically fight after Andrew is frustrated at   Benders constant taunting (see ‘Frustration to Aggression’)
  • Andrew antagonises John, john reacts is an aggressive manner once triggered by an environmental presence (Books wiped from counter, see ‘Frustration to Aggression- Environmental trigger’)

The ‘frustration – aggression + trigger’ hypothesis was developed by Leonard Berkowitz, expanding on the original yet basic Frustration – Aggression hypothesis.

It refers to how one ‘caves’ to pressure and therefore, the demands of others. A famous experiment ran by Stanley Milgram (see ‘Milgram’s Electric Shock’) created several factors that obedience is based upon (image 2). These are the fundamental influences as to how obedient human’s can/are as according to how they were raised under society.
