<title>IOC - Advice to Students:Keep a close eye on the clock during your 20mins preparation time. You may wish to consider utilising the following approach:* 0-5 mins - identify the &#39;macro&#39; elements on the text. Such as Audience/Purpose/Context. What is the central message here? What is the composer trying to achieve? How does the text position the responder (you will support this later with close textual analysis)? What is the tone of the text?* 6-10 mins - Focus on the &#39;big ticket&#39; textual forms and features. For instance, how is the text structured to achieve its purpose? What is the central colour, symbol or image that unifies and coheses the text?* 11-15 mins - Focus on the &#39;nuts and bolts&#39;. Chose examples from &#39;across the text&#39; and analyse how language features are used to shape meaning and effect the responder.* 16-20 mins - Organise the sequencing of your speech. You may wish to work your way through in the following fashion, or chose another approach with which you feel confident and that works for you:- Central Message or Idea- Audience/Purpose/Context- Focal character/s and their defining characteristics- Setting and how it is used to shape meaning and affect the responder- Theme/s- Major symbols, colours, images- Language features that develop the theme/s and/or central idea/s- Your final comments, insight gained or &#39;take away&#39; from the text</title>
