Sketchbook Collage

This is a collage of my sketchbook work for the first semester. At the top you can see that I didn't know what style or type of drawing I wanted to focus on and it wasn't refined or clean. The bottom two are a lot more appealing in their shading, depth perception, and overall creativity.

Still-life Project

In this first semester did the still-life Project and I think it helped me so much with shading, and especially value, tone, lighting. The comparison between the illuminated dark cloth and the shaded light side of the Rubik's cube. It was very difficult to get right but it was definitely worth it for all that I got out of it.

The mountain drawing

One of the first projects we did this year was the one we worked on line weight with. I chose to do a landscape of mountains (like many others lol) with a flat plane in the front. I finished the mountains and thought I did a pretty good job with the shading and stuff, but the drawing had a lot of empty space at the bottom and top where nothing was going on and it didn't look very finished, (especially because I decided to not use any coloring and keep it black and white) so I decided to add a bunch of sticks of floating butter just randomly dispersed throughout the image. In my opinion it made the drawing a lot better and i'm happy with how it turned out (note: I didn't manage to get an image of it because I was sick on Thursday)

Overall, I feel like i've improved in my shading, depth perception, tone, value, coloring, lighting, and in my drawing abilities. I'm not used to having a full week for a single project; at my old school we did one project per day but I enjoy this way more and it's a lot more rewarding when you see a finished product that you know you did your best on.

I have learned to use tone, value, line weight, depth perception, and shading throughout the first quarter of the year. The still-life project was the most helpful project of the year so far.

Heather Hansen has a really cool technique that involves the anatomy of the human body. When you look at one of her drawings you can most of the time tell which way she was facing.

Still-life drawing

My object was the Rubik's cube and I found this project to be very fun and rewarding. When I started drawing it was a very light shade and I hadn't added much shading. once I finished all the shapes, I started making the shadows on the shapes darker, but that made the cloth look lighter so I made the cloth darker and it kept going for the entire project. In the end, I think I did pretty well and the shading made darker definitely helped.
