Ms. Kimbley was concerned about classroom management and without it, how would she be able to implement STEM activities.
this began an ongoing exploration. Our first discussion led to the belief that the core of classroom manage is creating a community based on strong communication and collaboration skills. We introduced a circle procedure and soft voices. Students sat in a circle. The first student named one thing he liked. He then handed the stuffed animal to the person next to him. She said "Thank you (and student's name). Repeated what the student liked and said what she liked. The process of saying thank you, using the other student's name and repeating what they had said took quite a while, but the students all stayed engaged and with prompting were able to do it. This photo was taken a couple of weeks later. Ms. Kimbley had continued the process and the students had made dramatic improvement. 
Ms. Kimbley noticed the students were more respectful and calmer as she continued to implement the circle time. She changed the questions to support the academic focus. 
Key Take-Away: Students needed direct instruction and support to improve communicating something as simple as repeating a peer's name.
