Music is used in The Great Gatsby to convey a deeper message and meaning. These songs are used in a strategic way to help delve into the mood of the scene. The music during this time period, known as the jazz age, was characterized as careless and free flowing. These songs translated the feeling of the characters, and were used for the reader to better understand the novel.

Sheik of Araby

"I'm the Sheik of Araby. Your love belongs to me. At night when you're asleep into your tent I'll creep--" (78)

This song was originally written by Harry B. Smith and Francis Wheeler. The acoustics are by Ted Snyder. It is popular jazz music from this era. It was released in 1921. Many artists including the Beatles later covered the song.

Sheik is slang which means for men to be irresistible and for women to be infatuated with them.

Fitzgerald adds this song after Jordan Baker tells Nick a story. They are driving through central park as she describes Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanans relationship. She informs Nick how Jay bought a house across the bay from Daisy on purpose. This relates to the song because he creeps by following her and trying to lure her to him, through his parties. The meaning of sheik also relates because although Daisy is married, Gatsby assumes she isn't loyal, and she willingly obliges to cheat.

Creep by Radiohead

In place of Sheik of Araby, Creep by Radiohead would make a good substitute. This song came out in 1993 and is a type of alternative music. Although Sheik of Araby is more upbeat with major chords, creep could ultimately create the same affect. It includes lyrics such as "but im a creep... what the hell am I doing here." This song has a more somber tone and could represents Gatsbys search for somewhere he belongs. It could emphasize his need to constantly be around Daisy, but also him feeling lost and alone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akZtROsMS74

"In the morning, in the evening, ain't we got fun---" and continues on, "one thing's sure and nothing's surer the right get richer and the poor get- children. In the meantime, in between time." (95)

In this scene, Gatsby ordered Klipspringer to play the piano for Daisy. He commanded him to stop talking and just play. This song represents Gatsbys longing for Daisy. It also shows the confusion between the two, because Daisy is married to a cheating man and Gatsby is a shady person who gathers finances secretly.

This song is by Gus Van and Joe Schenck from 1921. It is a strong piece from the Jazz Age. It was very record like and slower. It still had an upbeat mood and made you feel like dancing. This is important because it correlates to Gatsbys parties. He used the parties to lure Daisy to him, and now Daisy was finally with him as they were isolated and alone. It was more personal.

Jazz History of the World

"This piece is known as... Vladmimir Tostoff's Jazz History of the World." (49)

In this scene Nick and Jordan are at Gatsby's party. Jordan is explaining to Nick about the intimacy of larger parties. There is an orchestra and the leader was directing the band. They announce the composition and began to play. The crowd at the event was in awe. Nicks eyes veered towards Gatsby and thought he was almost God like. As the song ended the girls were portrayed as “puppyish.” This is an example of how females were belittled. They thought they were dumb and treated them as such.

The Jazz History of the World is an imaginary song to represent the amazing performances at carnegie hall. They included songs such as Ain’t We Got Fun, Three O’clock in the Morning, and the Sheik of Araby. This is significant because all of these songs are later referenced in the novel.

Love Nest

“When Klipspringer had played The Love Nest he turned around on the bench and unhappily for Gatsby in the gloom.” (Fitzgerald, 94)

The love nest is played by Ewing Klipspringer in The Great Gatsby. Jay orders him to the room to entertain Daisy through music. Gatsby shuts off all the lights except for one by the piano, and this dim setting creates the mood. The song explicates the longing Daisy has for Gatsby, but the insecurity she feels about leaving Tom. It uses lyrics such as, "better than a palace with a gilded dome, is a love nest you can call home," which can relate to Gatsby's rich and fortune, but also compare to the true love they believe to share. The song by John Steel made in 1920 was very sharp. It was slow and then had crisp, higher notes to combat the somber feel.

For the mood Love Nest creates Fantasy would be perfect in its place. This song is by Alina Baraz and Galimatias. Fantasy came out in 2016. It’s genre is more so hip-hop and dance. The lyric, “so you say you wanna get away. We don’t need a plane I’ll be your escape,” would represent Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship fully. It creates this feeling of belonging such as Love Nest did. This idea that being together would combat all their issues in life. The romantic mood gives the reader more insight on the thoughts and beliefs of Daisy and Gatsby

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa2RIlsbOvA

This masterpiece by Paramore came out in 2012. The iconic pop song correlated perfectly with this scene. It states, “aint it fun living in the real world.” It relates because Gatsbys real world is very different than the average. He lives lavish unlike the majority. This makes him want to introduce Daisy to this rowdy lifestyle. It goes on to show that they enjoy each other’s company. The mood is upbeat and playful.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EFEmTsfFL5A
