In the south, it seemed like the war didn't change anything. Although my slaves have been freed, they didn't have anywhere to go. The slaves that stayed in my possession were freed during the time of readmitting the states. April 14, 1865- Lincoln Died

1865- Andrew Johnson took over

February 24, 1868- Johnson was impeached.

July 9, 1868- 14th amendment(proposed by the radical republicans) 

February 3, 1870,- 15th amendment was ratified

When the south was controlled by the democrats, they didn't enforce the laws that state every man is equal. During reconstruction, the north sent an army there to make sure the follow the laws and enforce them. They were doing their job until the election of 1876. Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was elected on one condition,he would remove the army from the south.
