This poem has a lot of repetition which seems to contribute to the theme/focus on how humans spend years and years with repeating struggles because they are chasing useless dreams with little importance to them. Whitman is questioning everybody's life purpose and he believes that everyone around him is faithless. He expresses how he is caught in a senseless life and he doesn't understand what his purpose is. But at the end of the poem, he finds his answer merely existing is a motivation for living.
