Like in Belgium they shared the power among the French-speaking and Dutch-speaking communities. In Belgium, no majority is putting their dominance over the minority and there have been no conflicts between the 2 communities. Whereas in Sri Lanka, an Act came on action which disregarded the minority. The Sinhala put their dominance over the Tamils which later created a civil war. 
Therefore, power sharing is very much important for a country to work in a better manner where both majority and minority are treated equally.

It started from 1975-1990, for approximately 2 and half decades. The reason behind the civil war was the distrust created between 3 ethnic groups, namely- Christians, Shia Muslims, and Sunni Muslims. These groups wanted to get to the power and political instability was thus created. 
Before, in 1926, a power sharing model was implemented, where different posts were secured for particular ethnic groups.
For example:
>President- Christian
>PM- Sunni Muslim
>Deputy PM- Christian
>Speaker of the Chambers- Shia Muslim
Furthermore, these communities agreed upon not to seek any foreign help. 
However, this order was disrupted in 1975 leading to a long civil war which ended in 1990 by foreign intervention.
Even today, it continues to face these problems.

  2. The state governments are not subordinate to the Central Government.
  3. Brussels has a separate government in which both communities have equal representation.
  4. Apart from the Central and the State Government, there is a third kind of government. This ‘community government’ is elected by people belonging to one language community – Dutch, French and German-speaking – no matter where they live. This government has the power regarding cultural, educational and language-related issues.
