Our brief is to design a day around adventure and how we use it at Impact.

- Filter people into ability/experience groups
-Why bother with adventure?
-What does it give/risk?
-Do something to get people to recollect their most adventurous moments.
-Those groups do a small, uncomfortable "adventurous' experience and discuss what is adventure for them, and what are the salient factors that can be transferred to any situation to make it adventurous.
-They will then consult with another group and design them an adventurous afternoon. and so on. Not, for each other to prevent collusion. The design will be around style, objectives, theme; rather than specifics.
-We can then offer out all the possibilities and let the negotiation and consideration begin...
-Need some overall objectives for the day.

Thoughts from Slack on the difference between adventure and challenge

Challenging - Something that has come your way, often unforeseen, and is acknowledged and usually needs to be dealt with. Adventurous - A personal choice !

rachaelgarner [4:52 PM]
I don't think trying to define or compare either matters at all

Roy White [5:47 PM]
Challenging: up to 10% above your current level.
Adventurous: Doing something completely out of your comfort zone. Unlikely, you have done it before.

Jeremy Benton [9:24 PM]
from the great book - challenging - testing one's abilities; demanding.

[9:25]
Adventurous - willing to take risks or to try out new methods, ideas, or experiences.

rachaelgarner [9:28 PM]
Adventurous - testing ones abilities; demanding. Challenging - willing to talk risks or to try out new methods, ideas, or experiences. There will be a dictionary definition for sure, but that will be just an opinion. I say both words mean whatever you want them to mean. X

Simon Coker [10:16 PM]
Challenging is something that’s hard but you know needs to be done to achieve the goal and where you know what has to be done and how it will stretch you. Adventurous has the element of unknown and uncertainty of process and outcome - you start out not knowing how this is going to be pan out. That’s what makes it feel risky. (edited)

Dominic Fitch [10:24 PM]
Adventurous is fun and exciting and brings to mind Indiana jones or a romantic knight on a quest, challenging is a bit of a ball ache and is the same adjective you can use to describe something mundane like a tax return.

Jonathan Stevens [10:24 PM]
Worth a quick read - one could say the same over- protection is true for a lot of our clients; http://www.lotc.org.uk/why/risk-challenge-and-adventure/ (edited)

andy dickson [11:02 PM]
challenge - out of comfort zone Adventure - journey with an uncertain outcome

Graeme Kirkup [9:29 AM]
Interested to hear your view @markquest

Mark Quest [11:37 AM]
Challenge, for me, is operating on the limit of my abilities be it physical, social, emotional, intellectual.

Adventure has challenge in it but is driven by what I value and hold dear to me, it's open ended and has unknowns in it and is definitely consequential to my values. So I value my abilities to be in mountainous environments that could really harm me if I don't rise to the challenges that the mountains bring. I bring my skills and knowledge and reflections to the Direct encounter and dance along the tightrope of success/reward and failure/disappointment

Grahame Broadbelt [11:43 AM]
nice, i like it @markquest

Mark Quest [11:50 AM]
So my reflection as a facilitator/instructor/guide is how can I design and deeply consider the adventure I offer my clients so that they can all have engaging, consequential and differentiated experiences. I'm seeing it all as a metaphorical cake which we are at impact baking to perfection all the time, I want to really understand the ingredients and the recipe
