Woolf uses imagery to make it appear as though the men are being treated with the upmost importance and respect. She writes "their potatoes, thin as coins but not so hard; their sprouts, foliates as rosebuds but more succulent. (lines 18-19). The description of something so simple, potatoes, shoes how sophisticated the men were treated. When she describes the potatoes in the women's article, she treats them as "just potatoes". Woolf also writes "Meanwhile the wineglasses had flushed yellow and flushed crimson; had been emptied; had been filled. (lines 25-26). This image that Woolf paints shows what really mattered to the men. They didn't care about the food. They cared about the social and party aspects of the luncheon.

Virginia Woolf lived life in the 20th century as a British author and feminist that used her voice to support women's rights. In order to show how women are treated differently and need to take a stance, Woolf uses different rhetorical strategies to get her point across to men and the women that need to stand up. During this time period, women had restricted roles and were taught to remain quiet even if they had complaints. After the dinners, occurred, Woolf decides she needs to get her voice out there.

Ethos: As an accomplished author, Woolf uses her status to show her credibility to her audience. These are also eyewitness accounts, so the fact that she was there gives her credibility.
Pathos: The accounts themselves appeal to the emotions of readers because it causes them to feel bad for the way in which they are treated.
Logos: Woolf uses her firsthand account in order to show that this is really happening. Although she doesn't use statistics, her experience takes the place of the data.

Woolf uses words such as plain and soup to show the difference in the meals. In the men's text, she uses elaborate descriptions and sophisticated wording to match the atmosphere of the room. She writes "counterpane of the whitest cream, save that it was branded here and there with brown spots like spots on the flanks of a doe". She uses the word plain when she says "it was a plain gravy soup" to show that the women's meal was viewed as insignificant. Oddly enough, these quotes are describing the same course but the word choice changes how it is understood.

Woolf closes the second text by saying "The meal was over. Everybody scraped their chairs back; the swing-doors swung violently to and fro". The syntax used here shows how the atmosphere was so different. This also shows that the women are conforming to society's standards by leaving without saying a word. Woolf is urging them to take a stand and by pointing this out, she hopes to make the women feel like this was the wrong way to handle things.

Woolf uses narration in order to get her message across. She uses the story of the two dinners she experienced. This method was effective because the story draws people in to read. During the time, people, men especially, had difficulty accepting that this was a reality so by using a story, she got people to listen to her.
