In this scene, Officer Schmitt came to Michael’s (the author’s) house to talk to Israel, his father, about getting rid of the Jews in Żarki, and moving them to “somewhere safe” which means they will be punished and put through lots of hard labor. This scene is significant because it portrays a deeper level in the story and uses an immense amount of imagery within this paragraph. The scene really connected with me and I understand what was happening from Michael’s point of view. In addition, the author restated over and over again that this situation was not normal, which added suspense to the text. Pg. 91

In the given scene, Michael’s mom was not listening to his father and decided to go outside and check on her parents, even though she knew it was not safe for her. Just before this scene, while Israel was coming home, he would pass by a shot-up house and blood spots on the ground where people were killed because they did not listen and/or they were trying to escape. I believe this scene has an impact in the text because it adds suspense and intrigues the reader into reading what happens next. In addition, the scene represents that in this time, people would fish their life over and over again because they would rather die fighting than die giving up on life and not pushing through the hardest times in life. Lastly, this scene speaks to me in a higher level than others because it doesn’t just explain Michael’s point of view, but others as well. Pg. 16

In this scene, Mamishu, Michael’s mom, was getting her house all set up so that nothing looks suspicious, when all of a sudden Israel is talking to a gentlemen outside. Mamishu was carefully watching the two men have a conversation and discuss a secret topic, which she obviously knew about. Before Israel came inside, the last thing Mamishu saw was the, agreeing and shaking hands, which is not what Mamishu wanted to see. This scene is important in the story because is makes the readers go on the edge of their seat and wonder what is so bad about two men agreeing on a term. The suspense suspends and readers taste in the book and pushes them to keep reading. This build up of suspense adds the deepness of the novel and shows how the book has good quality.

In this scene, Mamishu was waiting for Israel to come home from the torturous work he had to go through that day. As she is waiting, Mamishu is realizing that it is getting closer to curfew, where all Jews outside their house after curfew are killed. This scene is important because it adds an immense amount of suspense into the novel, by making readers wonder whether Israel will make it home in time or not. The added suspense builds up, like a ball of fire, and nudges the readers to read further on and on until the suspense folds out. This scene is incredibly important in the build up of success this book comes up with.

In this scene, Michael and his grandmother, Bobeshi, were finally liberated from Auschwitz. I chose this scene because I felt it was a huge achievement that happened in the novel and symbolized the relief they felt after how much they went through. In addition, personally, I felt like the text had a depressing tone to it and this scene “shined a light” in the story. To add on to that, Michael realized that the soldiers were there for them and their main focus was making sure the people were safe. I strongly believe that this scene dramatically changed the quality of the text, primarily in a better way.

In the passage below, a lady that looked and sounded like Mamishu was standing at the door in front of Michael. While this scene was going on, Michael was previously thinking it was Mamishu and she was coming back from the war. All of Michael’s thoughts were about Mamishu and seeing her again, after she had to abandon him in Auschwitz. I believe this scene is powerful because it keeps the readers on their toes and makes their heart beat fast, hoping that Michael will get to see his mom. In addition, the suspense of whether who it was pushed the readers to read more and more, until the truth folded out. This scene personally connected to me and showed me how much I love my mother, which is part of the reason why I picked this quote.

In this scene, Israel and Mamishu have been going through a ton of stress at the moment, especially when they are told that Zarki, their home was getting over powered by the government. The government wants them to eliminate all of the Jews, including Michael’s family. After all of the stress, the scene explains that Michael was born and finally, they have something to enjoy or to look forward when going through this stress. I chose this scene because it changes the plot dramatically and adds another aspect to the story. This change of events brought another view into the story and provided a series of future events that will eventually happen. I would like to say this scene begins the “snowball” effect for the rest of the story. In addition, the birth of Michael added another factor, whether he will make it through and survive throughout the Holocaust.

In the following text is when Michael and his family get off of the painful, long train ride to Auschwitz. Michael’s first opinion was of the burning flesh that surrounded the camp entrance. I believe this scene is important and powerful because it continues to build up the suspense throughout the novel. This “build up of suspense” is the readers wanting to know whether Michael goes through the same gas chambers that has claimed the lives of millions. In addition, this piece of text adds onto the mood of the devastation and pain that filled the air in Auschwitz. This passage is the starting point of Michael and his family's journey throughout Auschwitz and it will changes their lives forever.

In this scene, Michael was getting a tattoo, not the ones people want, but the ones who changed a person's life. This change in Michael’s life was not a good thing, it changed who he was to the Nazis and his identity to the soldiers. I strongly believe that this event in the novel and in real life changed Michael’s life and mad him always remember he was part of the Holocaust. I purposely chose this scene because this scene shows only a sliver of pain that Michael went through, which he experienced right from the start. In addition, the use of intense vocabulary enhanced the feelings the reader experienced during the novel.

In this scene, Michael was walking on the street, when a women, just like Mamishu, was walking on the sidewalk as well. When Michael looked up suddenly, he thought it was Mamishu, but he also thought it would never be Mamishu. Earlier, Aunt Hilda told Michael that the factory, where Mamishu was working, burnt down and there were no survivors. I believe this scene is important because it gives Michael hope in what he never thought would happen. In addition, this scene keeps the audience on the verge of skipping ahead just to see whether it was Mamishu or not, due to the fact that the readers know it wasn’t Aunt Hilda and it couldn’t be anyone else. I mainly chose this part because this scene led to me feeling an immense amount of joy after Michael got to see his mother again.
