The photo shown is a jar of Cherry Blueberry Jam. While the cover photo has beautiful natural looking fruits, it's actually far from it. With 90% of the sugar coming from dangerously added sugars. If an older adult would consume 2 1/2 tablespoons of this jam they are already reaching their maximum daily intake of 24 grams per day. Instead I would advise to opt for a whole grain slice of toast coated with a little almond butter and topped with a layer of fresh cut bananas. You get the benefits of fiber from the whole grain and the natural sugar from the banana.
- Camy Niculcea

Soft foods like jello are highly recommended for people that have hard time eating solids (for us it was when my siblings and I had a wisdom teeth taken out). Many older adults, especially when hospitalized, tend to have jello as food options when there is 19g of sugar for a serving size of 1/8 of a package! A better alternative to this would be yogurt or even eating mashed fruits that have "natural" sugar to them that would provide nutritional benefits.

- Kristen Mayorga

The photo below shows the nutritional facts of a RX Bar which is a healthy and natural alternative to protein bars. This is a great example of to eat when they are on the go or find that they often eat little to no meals throughout the day, which is often the case for older adults. These bars are packed with protein from natural ingredients such as egg whites, almonds, cashews and dates. Dates are a natural source of sugar, which are essential for our diets. However, as you can see on the nutritional label, there are zero added sugar. Older adults especially should consider the new nutrition labeling requirement on 'Added sugars' when choosing snacks because it is often overlooked and can contribute to excessive intake of sugar in the diet.

-Gabrielle Seneres

The ingredients are mainly corn syrup and there is nothing organic about it. If an older person wants a strawberry jam and peanut butter sandwich, the total intake of sugar will be 12 grams of sugar, which is already half of the daily intake an adult should have. One solution will be to have peanut butter on toast with fresh strawberries on top or on the side.
-Nydia De Leon

There is a total of 4 servings in this container and each serving has 29 grams of sugar. This yogurt is fed to my grandma every day. However, after viewing this week's lecture I learned that seniors are not recommended to eat more than 24 grams of sugar. This is very concerning because we were giving her about a cup of yogurt and that was only a snack. I cannot imagine how much sugar she was ingesting through out the entire day. After viewing this lecture, my family and I are planning to find other brands of yogurt that do not contain as much sugar. We are also planning on limiting yogurt to once a week and instead give her vegetables or fruits. The only barrier with all this is that my grandmother has a sweet tooth, but I am more than positive that there are other brands with less sugar or recipes to make homemade yogurt.
-Guadalupe Maldonado

This is the nutritional label of a can of tomato sauce. Tomato sauce can be used in plenty of dishes like spaghetti, lasagna, casseroles and tomato soup. It's easy to assume that because this sauce is made from a natural ingredient it would be fairly healthy yet, the nutrition label proves otherwise. Who knew that when we're consuming a dish like spaghetti were also intaking sugar? It's important for everyone to thoroughly read nutritional labels to be aware of what we are really consuming. Although courses that have tomato sauce are quite delicious it would be wise for an older adult to portion their consumption of such ingredients and perhaps not eat such courses as often. Perhaps it would even be wise to search for alternatives of brands who use less sugar. -Tania Gatica

Searching my fridge there are very few items with added sugars (well, I am one of those) I do have a box (or two) full of all the forbidden stuff in my pantry, for emergencies, and for the teenagers (once a day max). One dangerous food that disguises as health food is yogurt with fruits, where sugar is the second ingredient in the list, bringing the sugar level to 21 grams per serving ! and zero fibers from the fruits. I entered a photo from the website. There is a diabetic version with artificial sweeteners, that contains "only" 7-8 grams of sugars per serving, still no fibers, but the artificial sweeteners are known to harm our microbiom (our gut microbial flora) and are bad for us. My solution is either plain yogurt or cottage cheese with a handful of berries. This is how you get only the natural sugars from the milk and the fruits, and all those good fibers. If you still need sweetening, few drops of stivia extract or a tsp of erythrytol will do the work safer than any other artificial sweetener. Try to lower sweetener's level gradually if you need it at first and to get used to the sweetness of the fruits without added sweetener. Enjoy.

Lali (Michal) Accad-Elisha

The following nutritional label is Smucker’s Strawberry Jam, a spread commonly used to sweeten up our meals whether that be for a savory sauce or breakfast pastry. This common product in our pantries and fridges is often advertised as nutritious with fruits pictured on the front of the product however with a closer glimpse at the nutrition label, 12 grams of sugar is found in just 1 tbsp! One method an older adult might utilize to reduce their sugar consumption is to find alternative jams such as sugar free or even reduced sugar so that their daily recommended sugar intake is not wasted on just a couple tbsp of jam. Other options can be to make your own jam which will allow you to monitor the ingredients and amounts of sugar as well as finding other substitutions such as honey or gelatin to create that jelly consistency.
- Anthony Nguyen
