This fiction text is about a fish who learns to share his sparkly scales, which matter most to him, in order to make friends. Activities following this text can include students writing on a scale their favorite item that they would share with friends, students spending two minutes swapping scales with each other after they are decorated to imitate sharing, and then all scales put together on a wall in the classroom to make one fish. Bringing all the scales together will help in discussing the final big idea: teamwork.
(Sharing page 22)

In this informational text about sharing and teamwork, the main character, RJ learns about teamwork through the definition of sharing and the idea that every person has a role when working as a team. Examples of working as a team and sharing in sports, in the classroom, and at home are given. This text set on sharing and working as a team will be concluded with a teamwork activity, in which the class goes to the gym and plays soccer (like RJ) with everyone having a different "job" or position. Specific praise will be given when students share the ball, take turns in different positions, and complete their "job" so the team as a whole is successful.
(Sharing page 1, Team page 2, Patient page 19, Teamwork page 24)

NYSDE Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Benchmarks

This text set was developed with the third goal of the NYSDE SEL Benchmarks in mind, which involves cooperating and collaborating with others (2018). Kindergarten students are expected to make positive decisions when they interact with their peers, and perform roles that contribute to the classroom overall (New York State Department of Education, 2018). It should be noted that social emotional skills in kindergarten are predictors for graduating, completing college, and maintaining a full-time job (Jones, Greenberg, & Crowley, 2015). Additionally, social emotional skills decrease emotional distress, help students be more engaged, and improve academic achievement (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011).
