Summary

I appreciate the manner in which the author, Neal Shusterman, conveys the characters' almost exact and in-the-moment emotions while reading. His way of wording definitely catches your attention. He really makes you feel like you know the characters on a personal level as if they were your friends. For example, I felt so much compassion for Scythe Farraday when he sacrificed himself for another scythe. At that moment, I actually felt like I was losing a friend. The characters' emotions and actions are described so vividly that they help you better visualize the characters' everyday schedules and activities. For example, the book describes Scythe Citra waking up before the sun rises to train, practicing weaponry, learning algebra with little time for breaks or to eat food. These details make you wonder how hard it would be to train for these events and how much determination you would need to have. The author, Neal Shusterman, uses many literary techniques to relate the book and characters to real-life situations. One of the things that stood out to me was the bias in Scythes "Gleaning". Making connections between the police in our lives and the scythes in the book is important to me. As a result of this, I also believe that the bias that is shown by scythes on who they "glean" can be related to real-world bias amongst police officers. World events lately have painted an ugly picture of the stereotyping of minorities or racial discrimination that police have shown. Overall, the book gets 5/5 stars from me. I plan to read the next book in the series, Thunderhead. Keeping it vague, my prediction for the next book is that Citra and Rowan will have more adventures together, and I wonder if they will end up like Scythe Curie and Scythe Faraday. I'll read the next book and let you know what I think!

The first example is, "Rowan slowly begins to understand Goddard's mind. He notices that the more bloody his gleaning massacre turns out to be, the more invigorated he seems, like a vampire sucking the life out of its victims." This is a simile, this shows how terrible scythe Goddard is and why he is bad. The second example is, "All she knew was that walking down her street suddenly felt like she was walking in some foreign land where the people spoke a language she didn't know." This is a hyperbole, this shows how she felt like she didn't know anyone and she was left out. The third example is, "When I gleaned the president and his cabinet, it shook the world-- but the world was already shaking just fine without me". This is personification because you cannot glean a cabinet. This quote was important because status does not determine the chances of you being chosen to get gleaned.
