The American revolution inspired the french to have a revolution of their own. The French joined the Americans to get back at britian for stealing land.

Reign of Terror

A violent time period during the French Revolution where the revolutionary government and committee of Public Safety executed thousands of people because they were deemed, "enemies of the revolution." There were mass executions and public killings in gatherings. The main person in charge of these doings was Maximilian Robespierre. The national convention soon forms a 12 person committee to implement the ideas of the revolution and protect it from their enemies. This was called the committee of public safety. Soon the dechristianization of France started. The word saint was removed from street names, churches were pillaged, they eliminated Sundays, and changed the calendar. Finally, at the end, they ended up executing Maximilian.

King Louie was in charge with his wife Marie Antoinette. They lived lavish lives and were not caution with their money. France was a absolute monarchy as in the King dictates all and is in charge of everything. The weather in France was far from great and led to a Famine the people blamed it on the King because they kept all the food for themselves and made the people pay high taxes.

The 3 estates meet under King Louie's order and talked about the problems. They talked a lot but could not do anything because they didn't even know how to vote, by estate or majority.

The national assembly meet in a tennis court in the Versailles castle. This is where the French people first declared that they would fight for equal rights and a constitution.

National Assembly (June 17, 1789)

The national assembly was members of mainly the third estate declaring themselves the National Assembly. The national assembly acted as a body that would represent the needs of the French people. It passed laws, questioned the king on authority, and created the first constitution for the French. Since the third estate had no legal right to act as the national assembly, this is considered the first steps in the French Revolution.

Declaration of rights to man and citizens August 26, 1789

The national assembly met up and started to create a constitution they also declared that they would no longer recognize the estates as the social order in France

Women's march on Versailles October 5, 1789

The women heard a rumor that the Queen was hiding grain for herself. This lead them to arm themselves and storm the Vesailles castle. They forced the queen and king out of the castle and made them move into the one in Paris called the Pallace of Tuileries. The women made them move there so that they have a front row seat to see what is happening in their country

Storming of the Bastille (July 14th, 1789)

Louis XVI sends troops to Paris to put an end to social unrest that was caused by pressure to pay taxes and the food shortages. The national Assembly did not like this. The take this as a provocation and storm the Bastille to free prisoners and to obtain weapons to protect themselves from the occupied troops sent by the king.

The king and queen attempt to escape (1791)

The king and queen attempt to escape due to the pressure of the impending revolution. They dressed as servants and try to escape to one of the generals estates. They ultimately came out unsuccessfully. This provoked the nationally assembly. They basically said that since they tried to escape, they were no longer considered the king and queen by the nationally assembly.

National Assembly splitting

The national assembly started to split into 4 fractions including the

Jacobins- very violent, lots of support, most radical

Montagnards- very radical, more violent, led the commetti of public safety, allied with the Jocobins

Girondins- moderates, opposed absolute monarchy and the execution of the King, favored foreign war, strong support from outside of Paris

The plain- largest group, voted for the execution of the King, helped over throw the jocobins later on

Massacre of Champ de Mars (July 17, 1791)

The Jacobins gathered in Champ De Mars and claimed that the National Assembly wasn't radical enough and tried to convince others that the king had abdicated the throne. Troops soon comprised of members from the national assembly were sent to the Champ De Mars to calm the Jacobins down, but it ended up backfiring. Things ended up getting out of control and National Assembly troops panicked and fired upon the Jacobins, killing 50 people.

Massacre of Champ de Mars- June 17, 1791

The jacobins gathered in the park called Champ de Mars and were saying how the National Assembly is not radical enough and that the King tried to abandon them and gave up his status. Then the national assembly sent troops and fired up on the jacobins, killing 50 of them.

Prussia and Austria say that their going to help France and restore the monarchy. King Louie encourages this, which makes the national assembly mad.

Execution of the King Jan 21, 1793

The people were mad King Louie let foreign countries help him. They saw this as treason and by 1 vote they executed him. Queen Marie was also executed soon after. This is the beginning of the Reign of terror.

Directory 1794-99

It was a reaction to the end of the Reign of terror. It was an executive branch of 5 men and a legislative branch which included a bicameral legislature. Most members were middle class and some were corrupt. When the directory was in place there was peace in France

General Napoleon

Coup d'Etat 1799

Napoleon surrounds the directory with his troops and drives them out. The remaining members vote to get rid of the directory. Napoleon named himself first consul and got the powers of a dictator.

Emperor Napoleon 1804

Napoleon names himself emperor. His goal is to bring glory to France from the outside. This means war. He also did the Louisiana purchase during this time.

Napoleonic Wars

This was a huge war where it was Napoleon vs everyone else. Britain, Russian, and Austria join forces to take down Napoleon. Napoleon rises to the occasion and as a result of war and diplomacy, all three nations sign a peace treaty with France. Spain, Portugal, Prussia, and Sweden also fight at various times. At Napoleon's peak, he makes a mistake by invading Russia and loses almost 500,000 men to cold weather and Russias resilience. In 1814, Napoleon gives up his throne and is exiled from France.

Napoleon returnes 1815

Napoleon returns to France in 1815 and forms an army and attempts to restore his throne. He defeated Belgium that same year, but was then exiled from his throne again.
