Women had been underrepresented and restricted in Antebellum America; the feminist movement of the 1800s was a fight for more female representation and respect. Especially due to the Doctrine of Separate Spheres, women held very small roles in such a male dominated society. In addition to the urge to gain more representation, women in the feminist movement actively participated in the reform movements on behalf of temperance and the abolition of slavery. Through their participation in these movements, women were able to express their troubles regarding life in a male-dominated society.

Two influential women, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, were pivotal in the organization of the Seneca Falls Convention in which the Declaration of Sentiments was proclaimed.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was an outspoken woman who strongly believed in the abolition of slavery and women’s representation in society. She was an avid reformer, meaning she often worked to bring about change. Her work during the feminist movement was no different. After being rejected from an anti-slavery convention in London, Cady Stanton, along with Lucretia Mott, decided that their activities as reformers should be centralized around the elevation of women’s status in society so their voices could be heard.

The feminist movement led to the creation of the first women’s rights convention— the Seneca Falls Convention— as well as many more to follow. The creation of these sorts of conventions was crucial to women gaining more rights in American society. Without the initial feminist movement, women would never have been able to gain the right to vote. Additionally, the women who participated in the abolition of slavery helped put an end to the institution through their protests.

The feminist movement caused great changes in American society. This movement eventually led to women’s suffrage, which drastically changed the amount of power and responsibility a woman could hold at the time. This movement helped to rid the nation of the drastic gender roles of the nineteenth century. This movement gave women an opportunity to speak up against injustice, which was unheard of before this time. This sparked a change in American society that remains visible today.
