Sample reading response: In my book The Thief of Always by Clive Barker there are two big life lessons or themes that are especially important so far in this story. One theme is that it’s important to appreciate what you have, and a second theme is that things are not always what they seem to be. 

An example of how it’s important to appreciate what you have is when Harvey doesn’t appreciate his life at home and decides to go to the Holiday House. It ends up being a nightmare. He also really appreciates what he had when he goes back home and realizes that he has lost so much time with his parents. 

Harvey also learns that things are not always what they seem to be. For example, the magical Christmas tree gives all the children whatever they wish for, but then the presents turn to dust and ashes. He also realizes that things are not always what they seem to be when he discovers that the fish in the lake are actually children who are trapped in there for the rest of their lives.

Another example is when the mouse and his grandmother were trying to find a way to kill the vil witches, all their ideas had a flaw, but he and his grandmother never stopped thinking and trying. 

The little boy (the main character) also learns to ask for help when you need it, even if you don't want it. An example is when he got his tail chopped off when he was on his mission (to pour the magic potion into the witches food) his grandmother tried to help him, even when he was feeling the pain he didn't want his grandmother to help him. Another example is when the mouse and his grandmother where trying to kill the new Grand High witch they helped each other to improve the brilliant ideas each had, even if one didn't want help it made his thoughts clearer and better. The first theme is how everyone needs to be treated fairly and the second is the importance of friends in life.

My evidence for the book's first theme is that Luke wasn't being treated fairly because he was forced to hide due to the corruption of population police and the government. Luke always pictured the government as a mean man that always yelled at everyone, this means that Luke was afraid of them. 

The second theme's evidence is when Jen died Luke felt very sad. This theme is important because Jonah, Chip, and Katherine have to meet up with Angela Dupree to get information but they didn't believe her because it sounded really crazy, they almost thought she needed to go to some sort of rehab. An example of "Always believe in yourself" is when Percy is in the under world and he is going to swim in the river styx and he has to think of something that makes him mortal so that he doesn't die. He thinks he can't do it but at the end, he ends up not dying.

An example for "When you group up with different people and things, you can be very powerful," is at the end where Camp Half Blood is in a war against Kronos, the evil titan lord. One theme is that ordinary people can be capable of great courage. Another theme is don't be selfish. 

Evidence of the first theme is that Digory and Polly are ordinary people but they have to have courage when they go to other worlds and to get close to a talking lion.

Evidence of the second theme is that Digory is going to talk to the lion to see if the lion can help his mom. Another important theme in this book is that kids can make a difference.

An example of the theme of to help others and don't care about just yourself is how Digory is open to any possibilities to help his mother who is sick, or his friends. He is also really sad that she is sick and he would do anything to help her, he even went to talk to Aslan (the lion) to ask him if there is any way to save his mother, the only way to save her is to get something that is really long away but he doesn't care and he is going to travel there just to save his mother.

An example for the second theme kids can make a difference, is how Polly and Digory are fighting against Uncle Andrew and the evil queen to help save the world, they are also trying to help Digory's mother and make a difference which is saving her from dying. Another theme is do not be rude because Bilbo happily invites 13 dwarfs into his house he also willingly invites a wizard into his house. But when Bilbo starts getting a little rude and when that happens every one starts going insane and all the dwarfs start breaking things.
Bilbo also learns to not underestimate people because of what they look like because he thought that the wizard was some old man but he turns out to be the best wizard in the land. Pg 32.

An example of why to tell an adult if something is wrong is because since Jonah didn't seek help he got many kids including himself in harm's way.

 One way that the book shows that if an adult gives you an order, you should listen to it is when Sophie got stolen. Sophie got stolen because she didn't go to sleep at night like the adults told her to. She was lucky that the BFG was the one who found her. If she had just listened to the adults,  she would have been safe. This shows that if an adult gives orders, it is for your safety and you should listen even if you don't like it.

The theme that everything is possible when you put effort into it is shown when Sophie is able to come up with a plan to stop the other giants from eating kids, even though the BFG thought it was hopeless. Sophie came up with a plan, they did the plan, and the BFG got convinced it was possible. I know one that is important is trust no one because Harry read the Diary of Tom Riddle and then Tom said that actually Hagrid was the person who open the door but it wasn't him it was Tom, who lied and said it was Hagrid. Also it is important this theme because Harry's teacher Gilderoy Lockhart, he said that he had made books and thinks his the best while he by the other hand knows that he just invents stories that he had travel by places that are extremely to go.

In the other theme "always believe in yourself" it is important because Harry needs to pass through problems that are difficult like the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets from Slytherin, Tom Riddle (Voldemort), the Dursleys at Privet Drive, and lots of more problems.
