~World climate dictates how wet, hot, dry, and/or cold the earth will be. These patterns affect where organisms choose to live. From there, ocean location and impact upon weather and climate (and vice versa) impacts where an organism will choose to live on the land.

~Food, oxygen, and natural resources often come from the ocean. Food is provided for humans, marine organisms, and other land organisms alike. Food such as fish for mammals, or plankton for the ocean-dwellers. 50-80% of the oxygen in our atmosphere comes from the ocean. Natural resources usually entails products such as oil, which we use for heat, vehicles, and manufacturing.

We create pollution that harms our oceans and marine life, through general oxygen depletion or ocean acidification that makes the environmental uninhabitable. Overfishing can also damage fish populations and offset the preexisting balance of ocean and marine systems.

Being aware of the functions of the marine environment can help us pinpoint which of our decisions as a society is having an impact and how it does so. This also ties into ocean literacy. Ocean literacy will help us not only comprehend the ocean and its functioning, but allow us to make more informed and educated decisions about how to take care of our Earth.
