In general, would your family be classified as formal or informal?

For the vast majority of my upbringing, my family would certainly be classified as informal. Since my parents' divorce when I was two-years-old, I lived alone with my father and a variety of pets. Meals were usually not shared and eaten sporadically in different parts of the house (mostly a sandwich in front of the family room television). While I have always been respectful and kind towards my father (and vice versa), our interactions were certainly never the stiff, formal variety that defines life in some other more traditional households.

Was conflict dealt with in a direct or indirect manner?

Conflict was always handled directly, intensely, and typically never again — provided that the point of contention did not persist. If there was a problem, we would argue it out to its conclusion without beating around the bush or any sort of passive aggressive deference.

What or who were the subject of jokes?

My father is definitely an irreverent and offensive individual when he has the mind to be, especially after a few drinks or behind the wheel (no need to worry, the two situations mentioned are mutually exclusive). I grew very desensitized to certain jokes and subjects that would appall and offend many others. Although this has provided me with a harder shell to dark and in-poor-taste comedy and insults, I must be vigilant to not repeat some of the things I grew up around hearing for fear of getting myself in trouble.

Was competition or cooperation stressed?

A steadfast competitive nature was always stressed to me growing-up due to my father's recognition of what it would take for me to succeed. Given that my father was the sole provider of the household with his less-than lucrative blue collar job, it was clear that he would not be able to pay my way through early adult life and university when the time came. My father stressed to me the value of work ethic, determination, and goal-setting as a basis of my growth and progress. Since I would have to one day be independent and self-made in many aspects, competition was ardently stressed.
