People who are related to or friends with a drug or alcohol abuser act as the speaker. This is as they attempt to lead these individuals to the right path rather than having to continue watch the individual go down the same negative path. The inspiration behind the lyrics of the song "Leave A Light On" by Tom Walker was said to be "inspired by a friend who had been battling severe drug addiction."(Vigil 1) Within the song he encourages his friend to get help. He more specifically tells his friend that if he ever loses his way, he(Walker) "will leave a light on" for him so he can find his way back(Vigil 1). Walker uses appeals like ethos and logos in his lyrics, along with ethos and pathos in his music video, and finally, ethos, pathos, and logos in elements of imagery, connection, and symbolism. While analyzing the lyrics and music video as well as a brief amount of research is appears that Tom's use of appeals is effective in convincing his intended audience.

The occasion would be a friend or relative watching an individual who means something to them, go down the path of drug addiction and abuse. Walker also goes onto say that "despite the song being inspired by his friend's woes, it is also aimed at everyone dealing with addiction." So the occasion may include all types of addiction whether that be a substance or behavioral.

Pathos in the Lyrics

Pathos is shown in multiple ways throughout the song. This song hits home for many individuals which causes lots of emotional reactions. One of the best examples of ethos within Tom's lyrics is when he says "Guiding like a lighthouse to a place where you'll be."(Walker 2) Tom is saying that he would like to guide his friend and encourage him to and through the road to recovery. It's emotional not only for the user but as the friend who is working towards getting their friend to recover from something so hard and dangerous.
Here are several other examples:
"But if you carry on abusing, you'll be robbed from us"
Tom is saying that if his friend keeps using and abusing eventually he will overdose and be taken from this world
"Hiding from the truth ain't gonna make this all okay"
Tom is saying that if this individual keeps hiding from the truth that he is a user and abuser that it’s not going to make anything better but only worse.
"I could feel the trouble coursing through your veins"
Tom is saying that he can feel the pain that his friend is going through because of the path and actions he has chosen to use as a way to “recover” from the initial pain.
"Just a phone called left unanswered, had me sparking up"
Tom is saying that when his friend didn’t answer the phone it had him extremely worried because he thought the worst, that drugs had taken his life.
"Don't let go, keep a hold"
Tom is saying that he doesn’t want to see his friend “let go” in term of letting the drugs/alcohol take him over till eventual death
"Safe to feel at grace 'cause we've all made mistakes"
Tom is saying that he hopes his friend feels some sort of peace even with his decisions to use because we have all made mistakes, and none of us are perfect.

Logos in the lyrics

Logos is highlighted a few times throughout Tom's lyrics. The most obvious example is this, "I refuse to lose another friend to drugs." The example shows that Tom is not willing to let another friend go due to drugs. This implies that he has already lost a friend to drugs, meaning he has "experience". This is ideal as a logos example because it gives him credit to the experiences he has gone through and doesn't want to have to go through again.
Here are a few other examples:
"These cigarettes won't stop me wondering where you are"
This line shows that although Tom is strong he is also weak in this type of situation and he must also fall back on something addictive.
"Tell me what's been happening, what's been on your mind"
The verse indicates that Tom deeply cares about his friend and what that individual has been feeling.
"I will leave the light on"
This is the most repetitive line of the chorus and it hold great meaning to the artist. Tom states that he will always leave a light on for those who are at risk or in danger. This is because although he hasn't been a user, doesn't mean he hasn't gone through hard times where he just needed somewhere to go.

Overall, I think Tom Walker does a nice job using appeals like, ethos, pathos, and logos to get his message across to his intended audience. He uses these to inform his audience that there is a path to recovery and a way out from addiction and drug abuse; there will always be a light left on. The clear examples that Tom gives through his lyrics and music video give proof that he is a credible source who has actually gone through the pain of losing a friend to drugs.
