I major in Liberal Studies with the concentration of Kinesiology to pursue becoming an elementary school teacher.  I've always had an interest in teaching and helping the youth in my community. My hobbies are exercising, mainly weightlifting, and finding new, different music.  My favorite TV show is That 70's Show because the '70s just look so cool.

When I think about the term sustainability, what comes to mind are different questions on how to value different things. Are we living in a society where if we contain the same way we are living, are we actually going to make it to a certain point in time? People in need also come to mind when I hear the term sustainability. Many people live in harsh conditions to the point where their lifestyles are no longer sustainable and start to harm their overall well-being.

I want to discuss how students are not fed the proper healthy foods they are supposed to eat on a daily basis, how many food companies make unhealthy foods that are catered towards children, and how students aren't educated about healthy foods. This topic would fall under the pillar of environmental sustainability. 

Unhealthy foods served to children in school are a problem especially here in the United States because children are in their early stages of development and consuming unhealthy foods can interfere with how well the child will develop. Also, we already have the problem of the obesity rate in children going up every year and it can lead to some concerning problems for them and for future society's well-being. This topic continues to develop through time since now there are many options for a healthier diet for children but the problem is that many children yet still do not take these healthier options since the obesity rate is increasing. 

The solution for these children to maintain a healthy and sustainable diet for children is to make sure all the food that is given to them in school, is healthy and beneficial to consume. Also, to regulate companies toxic ingredients that they put in foods catered to children. Another way that can help students have a more sustainable diet is for schools to make the extra time to teach about healthy foods and their benefits. This can help children be better students, decrease the obesity rate in children, and can make these children be in an overall healthy state of being. 

This issue is important to me because I have witnessed many children suffering from diabetes and obesity at a young age and I feel like that should not be acceptable. Also, I feel like the United States became known as a country with a high obesity rate, so we should know by now that we should protect the children of this country by showing them a route of good dieting and eating nutritious foods.

The reason why the author made this article is to reach out to the public on how poorly treated labor, agriculture workers in the Central Valley are during COVID-19. The article is about workers suffering from the effects of COVID-19 at a nut-packing facility in Kern County, CA called Primex Farms. Veronica Perez was a worker for Primex Farms and became very frustrated with the poor management and respect of the labor workers. Perez became a labor organizer attempting to fix the problems the labor workers were dealing with, such as not social distancing with masks being prohibited at first meaning many workers falling ill. When these workers contacted COVID-19, they were sent home without having a paid leave meaning that they had two weeks without getting a payment which lead to many of the workers being financially unsustainable and not able to pay for basic needs. Perez then organized a protest where dozens of her co-workers walked out early chanting "We are essential" and held picket signs demanding three things, sick pay, protection, and respect. The HR manager then called Perez into their office and blamed her for the company being in danger to be closed due to the bad press and blaming her for everything. Perez says that she will fight for the basics needs labor workers deserve for their hard work even if that costs her, her job. 

The author, Julia Lurie, uses pathos to reach the audience's emotions by wanting the audience to feel pity for the labor workers. The author uses multiple quotes from the actual workers such as a quote Veronica Perez states that “It makes me want to cry because my co-workers…I’ve tried to be really strong in front of them, but I can’t anymore.” When they spoke up, things got worse. “We’re only asking for a safe place to work.”  Also, the article is also catered to those who have families that work in hard conditions and to those who live in the central valley since these workers are from our own central valley community. 

Lurie uses the Information Literacy Framework of using the article as an information creation as a process. Lurie has written many articles upon the same conversation of bringing more awareness of immigrants and their poor working conditions. In this article, Lurie had a slight cliffhanger of Veronica Perez, not fulling having a justice with the basic needs she wants for the workers of the company. My strategy for reading is to first skim the reading, only to see if the reading suits what I am looking for.  After I see that the reading suits to my liking, then I will start reading and annotating every paragraph and I am on look out for the answers to my research question.
What was difficult about the reading process?
The difficult part about the reading process is that sometimes the articles can be overwhelming and will have such high vocabulary which can be motivating since it is a lot of information to take in all at once.
What helped?
To help with my difficulties, I pause mid reading and I try to break down sentences I read that were complex and I try to have a deeper understanding of it. With the vocabulary I am unfamiliar with in the article, I will search up the definition of the word and try to have a deeper understanding of it.

The counter narrative: The counterargument is that many college students are able to maintain/have healthy eating habits, that college does not inflict in students schedule or mental healthy where they are able to fix themselves a healthy meal and able to be mentally healthy.
How is this counter-narrative can help solve the problem you are writing about: My counter-narrative can help solve the problem I am about since students can adapt to the college lifestyle and be able to balance personal healthy and college, where they are able to focus on their diet and are able to maintain it while attending class. Students will struggle sticking with their healthy diet, but the outcomes are very beneficial to ones health and can also have positive outcomes in school.

Thank you family, friends and people that loved Karen Zandarski.  It is truly heart-breaking and unimaginable to believe this can ever happen.  Today we are here to say our last words, goodbyes and to share memories of our beloved Karen. As Karen's son-in-law, I speak on behalf of the whole family and friends that we lost such a great mother, sister, husband and an overall great family member and friend. 
Karen was a person that everyone enjoyed being around with and loved. She impacted many students as a teacher at CSU Stanislaus and also impacted many of our lives outside of school. Karen always accepted me and treated me as her son which proves how wonderful of a person she was. Every time Karen was around, she brought a sense of warmth and love to any type of environment she was in.
