There is double edged sword for punishment, and Proctor is in a Catch 22 predicament, and his desire for being honest about lechery is too late as Abigail’s plan for vengeance is in place. Proctor’s comments in Act 1 about dying before touching her again are ironically becoming true.

We can argue that Abigail is a product of the affair between her and John after he metaphorically "took her from her sleep" (Act 1) and the audience may feel sorry for this teenage girl who was used and encouraged by John.

However, at the same time it is also tragic to see how John's reputation - and soon his life - is destroyed here. He is a hero in some ways, fighting for justice and to save his wife - but perhaps he is in this situation because of his lust? Is there a sense of karma here?
