She was born in a coal mining town. Her earliest memory is being brought an orange, an apple, and a little bit of candy on Christmases. She said it was so exciting! They never got fruit so this was always a very special time of year.
Alfreda said her childhood was hard due to a lack of no hot water. They had to boil their water by heating up coals on the stove. Alfreda saw a red necklace in a jewelry shop window that she thought was gorgeous, and her mother was able to get it for her birthday. "It was really something special," she said, "when you're poor you don't get things like that."

Raymond passed away in 2005.
