Repetition According to Ben Ratliff

While reading chapter one I was so incredibly fascinated by Ben Ratliff's definition and argument on repetition regarding songs. Ben states, "The best of what we call repetition in music, heard closely, is really the opposite of repetition: subtle differences, slowly shifting backgrounds, a change moving against a constant." (pg 14) which makes complete sense to me. Ratliff puts emphasize on the fact that repetition really isn't repetition at all, it's simply different aspects put together to give the impression of a repeating sound.

To Repeat or not to Repeat that is the Question.

Personally I agree with Ratliff's statement regarding repetition. I believe repetition in most songs do in fact repeat but the repeating part is actually made up of different sounds that make it seem like it is really just repeating the same beat the whole time.

LANY : It Was Love

Throughout LANY's song It Was Love, it becomes extremely noticeable how the verse "It was love
I know you know that
It was us
I wish I could go back
To sneaking around at night
And thinking we had our whole lives
It was love
I know you know that" changes to "It was love
It was us
It was love
It was us
Sneaking around at night
And thinking we had our whole lives
It was love
I know you know that" by the end of the song. Since the verse repeats three times I think Paul the lead singer really wants to emphasize the emotions he was feeling at this point of his life, especially when he sings " It was love It was us" x2.

"The ear tends to be lazy, craves the familiar and is shocked by the unexpected;"
- W.H Auden
I think the quote really represents what Ratliff is trying to explain about repetition. This really sheds light on the fact that we as humans do not like to stray from the norm, we like to be in our comfort zone.

"I'll meet listeners who tell me what a great voice I have. But I don't have a great voice for radio. My voice is the utterly normal voice, but sheer repetition has made them think it's OK. Mick Jagger once was asked, 'What makes a hit song? He said, 'Repetition'."
- Ira Glass
This quote really exemplifies how repetition has affected music and how it influences what is popular and what is not.

LANY Explained PT. II

LANY has become a popular bad over night due to the various repeating verses in It Was Love and almost any LANY song. The repetition present in these songs are actually only repeating the lyrics but the emotions present when these songs are being performed are not consist. So the listener is actually tricked into thinking the song is repeating when it's actually just playing the same sound with a slight variation to the tempo or rhythm.

The band does an outstanding job of repeating the same phrase twice but changed the second part of each phrase slightly.
"Bashful creatures, kids don't care at all
Bashful creatures, ratchet face and all

Oh bashful creatures, I don't give a shit
Oh bashful creatures, drown yourselves in it"

This example of repetition in nature expresses Ratliff's definition perfectly. In nature you will never find an identical plant or flower, just like in music. The tempo or rhythm could sound the same but it actually just has a slight variation to it.
