In current movies, magazines, commercials and advertisements, it is now typical to see well groomed men in good physical shape being featured with beautiful women. Over the past decade there has been a rise in the visibility of the male body in the media and popular culture. Never before have men's bodies been so much on display. Rosalind Gill et al. explain that there are a variety of reasons for this.

This shift in "visual culture" can be variously credited to the gay movement, feminism, the style press of consumerism, (and specifically the marketing of heterosexual women's desire) with responsibility.
With the change, a number of anxieties have been raised about the impact on men (particularly boys and young men), including concerns about health, self-esteem, body image and eating disorders. More fundamentally, there have been suggestions that males may increasingly be defining themselves through their bodies, in the wake of social and economic changes which have eroded or displaced work as a source of identity, particularly for working class men. Shilling (1993) argues that high modernity has produced an "individualisation of the body in which meanings are privatised and the body becomes a bearer of symbolic value. In consumer society it has become in Bourdieu's terms a source of symbolic capital, less because of what the body is able to do than because of how it looks".

Male consumers have been bombarded with a magnitude of products that claim they can transform a puny "waif" into a muscular hero.
In a time when there is less physical labour in most work occupations, the focus on men's physiques is at an all time high. In some cases the goal of attaining a "six pack" has become an obsession.

Some of the recent dramatic changes that have taken place regarding men and the way they think about their bodies are creating concern within the state of men's health. There has been much attention in the past regarding the female body image, but research has shown that body image has now become a problem for many men, with around half of all men unhappy with their body shape or size. It has also been revealed that the escalating figures on male anorexia and bulimia could be much higher than quoted because of the reluctance of men to seek medical help
