He was the founder of Standard Oil Company, and became one of the wealthiest men and major philanthropist.  John D Rockefeller built his Standard Oil Company in Ohio. BY 1880, his company controlled 90% of the industry. He bought out competitors and was able to raise prices far above normal levels. Critics began to call businessmen like Rockefeller "Robber Barons." They were taking advantage of their tough situation.
