As we read this chunk, I can say I see this as a mirror, I can somewhat connect with the author and how they grew up. My parents didn't have the right resources to have a career and had to move in with my grandma when I was born. They struggled financially not having enough money for my diapers,formula,toys and clothes. As I grew older my parents got a setting job we we finally had an apartment to ourselves after years of having to share with other people. At this time I was around 10, and around this age I started figuring out stuff I was not ready for. My dad was starting to grow as an alcoholic, it's not that he didn't drink when I was much younger,cause he had, but it's more that I realized that he changed when he was drunk, and as I grew up instead of not caring and playing around with friends or cousins, I started to care, because he would come unexpectedly drunk and it would cause traumatic events for me and my siblings. I can definitely feel what Jeannette feels by always seeing your father as this perfect person, someone who keeps your promises and then fails to commit to it, I can relate to it. That as well being my mother, who i've always told since I was young "why haven't you left him" she would always respond "I can't, how would I be able to provide for you guys on my own". Jeanette having her mother free-spirited but also not willing to leave Rex even though she knows he's a bad influence, she just never leaves him, is something I can relate to as well. I never experienced having to live inside a car for days, like Jeannette and her family, and not being able to eat food for days, which is something very sad to read about because this story is based on true events.

They struggle in Social class, Jeannette Walls shows how she grew up in a dysfunctional household, with financial problems living in a low class. Despite facing hardships, she proves her point in the story, she makes it known that if you're in a lower social status it does not define you. Growing up Jeanette and her siblings never lived in a upper class, and never seemed to be jealous of the wealthy. Rex and Rosemary had dreams and a chance to pursue their career and would have continued their dreams and make a better life for themselves and for their children. Now with their decision of not continuing their careers they end up living in a poor position, not be able to take care of them, feed them, dress them. They aswell choose not to ask for help, Rex and Rosemary are very free-spirited and see everything as a no big deal, which causes them to make bad decisions that affect themselves and children's life.

"In my mind, Dad was perfect, although he did have what Mom called a little bit of a drinking situation."(Walls,22)

At this time, they were sleeping in their car and didn't have a place to stay in and were always moving and on the road. This quote has a deep meaning of how Jeannette sees her father as this perfect father figure and amazing person who likes to have lots of fun and adventures with his kids. In reality he is an alcoholic who can't provide for his kids.

This quote is significant because it shows how Rosemary and Rex's parenting is. They are very free spirited when taking care of their children, not setting rules or giving them any orders. It shows what they truly believe in parenting, not putting enough attention to their children's and letting them do whatever they want.

This caught my attention because Jeannette is starting to realize her fathers drinking problem. The fact that it's Jeannette's birthday, all she asks for was for her Dad to be sober. Rex seems upset with himself and has this reflection of himself and knows he hasn't been the greatest father figure and that he knows that his children are ashamed of him. He then later on ties himself down, afraid that he won't be able to control himself. After days of being sober, he goes back to his old habits and returns back home drunk.

I picked this quote because it shows that Rex still loves his mother dearly even if his Mother was mean to the children, didn't take care of them or fed them or even treated them like grandchildren. Rex gets mad when the children couldn't care less if Erma was dead, which Rex responds "You kids. You make me ashamed. Do you hear me Ashamed!''(Walls,181) Jeannette has a similar trait as her dad, She always saw her Dad as this perfect man and she would defend him in his wrongs. Rex does this towards his Mother , even if she was in the wrong Rex would always defend her.
