This book is about a young girl with dyslexia that purposefully acts up to prevent others from knowing she has problems with reading. You start to get a visual image of the classroom as you read and start rooting for Ally as she struggles to overcome her dyslexia. The story gets more heartwarming after Mr. Daniels is introduced and tried his best to help Ally learn to read her own way.

A long walk to water - Linda Sue Park

Really interesting read with a very predictable, yet happy ending. It follows the story of a war-torn country and how it impacts the lives of two individuals in particular. Dual narrative books are always fun due to always being ready to see when they would overlap. It's based on a true story and is written by Linda Sue Park who also allowed a final message from the main character which is very nice to read and know after finishing the book.

Overpopulation is an issue we will eventually have to face and this book demonstrates one path humanity could go down. The story revolves around two teens that have to compete against each other to become a scythe which neither is too keen about becoming in the first place. Scythes are those that are chosen to kill humans as society has advanced to the point where we can prevent dying altogether. It's an exciting adventure and you get to have Moral/Ethical situations posed to you in ways you may not have thought of before. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the philosophical nature of overpopulation or someone that simply wants a thrilling read.

Thunder Head - Neal Shusterman

This is the sequel to the book "Scythe". One of the cool aspects of this book is that it introduces a new main character known as Grayson. He experienced a multitude of identity crises throughout the book including being an unsavory, a tonist, trying to work for the thunderhead agency, and even developing a relationship with the thunderhead itself. Another interesting aspect is that the book now gives the reader a look into what the thunderhead is thinking throughout the book. Both main characters are tossed into the same issues they faced before and an old character makes a dramatic return which threw everything into chaos. The ending is one i will not soon forget and I am excited for the eventual release of the final book in the trilogy.

This textbook is used throughout my CT's class. He introduced me to it and I've been reading it ever since to keep up with my content knowledge. A really cool aspect about it is that its written for middle schoolers and so it isn't as dry as a high school or college level textbook. It includes infographics as well as maps and other helpful tools I will need when I start teaching social studies in the future and need a few helpful ideas for a lesson.

Finding time to read is hard but worth it in the long run if you can get into the mindset for it. Reading something related to your content area or something that really strikes a cord with you is one of the best ways to start reading again if it's been awhile like it had been for me.

The challenge is going pretty well so far and I'm on track to meeting my goal. It seems like I will spend the next few weeks reading textbooks regarding my content area due to them involving more analyzing and being interactive. The reading sections also enhance my understanding and I've found they are extremely helpful with reviewing what you should know.
Finishing the scythe series left a somewhat large gap in entertaining stories and after my textbook obsession ends then I can see myself looking into more of the morally ambiguous books that provide thought provoking conversations.

This textbook comes with a multitude of links that lead to activities that reinforce what you learn from each chapter. It provides outlines, homework, and graphic visuals to help understand principles. Most of the chapters are middle school level which also contain primary resources like the declaration of independence and constitution. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys American history and wants to come up with fun ways of measuring what students know and need work on.

Howard Zinn - A young peoples history of the United States

This book is for those that enjoy social studies or those that enjoy a narrative view of U.S history. The book takes on the same characteristics that the author portrays as being the elite versus the masses. Class struggle is sprinkled throughout the novel as it tells the story of America from a viewpoint that the author believes is left out in most modern schools today. One aspect of this book that I personally enjoy is the story telling, but the entirety of the book is just that, a story. If a student were to read this then they would not be analyzing history, but instead would be reading stories from the past. I would recommend this book to someone that simply wants a good place to start learning about U.S history in a way that does not involve high end thinking or interpretation. It is a relaxation book for casual learning of things you may otherwise not have learned about.

A guide to the elements - Albert Stwertka

This book is recommended for those that wish to have a greater understanding of chemistry. The book is arranged where each chapter is only a few pages due to it consisting of each chapter being a different element on the periodic table. It goes in depth as to how the element was found and named and even goes further to include a brief history of the element in its uses. This book is a valuable resource for teachers that want to improve a student that seems to be doing exceedingly well in their classroom if the grade level was eight or higher. This book is not something a student would memorize facts from, but instead use as a resource to further their casual understanding of a few elements they may be curious about.
