How were you punished?

As younger kids, we would go into a sort of time out and read Emily Post etiquette books. For more major punishments we would get slapped. As we grew older, the Emily Post books were done away with and we would get grounded in the more traditional sense.

Who made the major decisions in your family? Mother? Father? Both? Other family members?

Both family members made important decisions, but the decisions they made were different. My father handled the more long term goals as in financial planning or academics, while my mother handled the day to day.

In general, would your family be classified as formal or informal?

My family would be classified as informal. We are all very open with each other and often make crude jokes that I can't see flying in other families. We're also sometimes informal in inappropriate settings.

How did you learn about religious matters?

I was raised Catholic. My mom comes from a Mexican Catholic family where you head to mass you, you treat your neighbor with respect, and that's that. My dad comes from and Irish-Italian Catholic family where you don't just go to mass every Sunday, you know your scripture. I've been able to appreciate both sides. I think it's important to really understand your faith on a deeper level, but it's also helpful to never lose sight of what really matter, something you sometimes lose when you get too deep in dialogue.

What was the attitude toward the elderly?

Honestly, mixed. There was never any mystique about the elderly, there were the same as you, not idealized. At the same time though, both of my parents had their fair share of issues with the Baby Boomer generation and that's a mindset I've picked up on. Typically, my family enjoys anywhere from a position of neutrality to a genuine maliciousness regarding the elderly.
