I chose Batman because I've been watching the movies since I was little. I remember in like 5th grade watching the Dark Knight and I was shocked by how cool the characters looked and how much I loved the world. As time went on I saw many different interpretations of the characters. From the silliness of Lego Batman to the dark reality of The Batman the style evolved. Thought all of these movies I saw two separate styles emerge. While both the silly style of The Lego Batman movie, and the more serious tone of The Dark Knight both have their merits, which is better? To answer this question I will use an observational study to analyze both the box office numbers as well as critical scores to get down to the bottom of this extremely important question.

Generally, batman movies which have more of a serious tone are more successful both commercially as well as critically.

Box Office Mojo Statistics analysis

Box Office Mojo is a website that compiles the box office of different movies and tracks it over time. The data I used is a ranking of all franchise Batman movies by total box office from their release to now. Using this data, I was able to make multiple conclusions. The most obvious conclusion is that Batman movies with a more realistic or gritty tone were far and away the most successful financially. The Dark Knight, a serious film, had the highest lifetime box office of about $533,345,358, and its sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, which similarly has this bleak tone, is the second highest-grossing movie with $448,139,099 in the lifetime box office. The Batman films with a more silly style were nowhere near as successful as the more bleak movies. The most successful batman movie with a silly tone is The Lego Batman movie, with a combined box office of $175,750,384, paling compared to the Dark Knight and its sequel. Other silly Batman movies do not fair much better, with Batman and Robin having a box office of $107,325,195. However, there are some problems with just using box office to measure a film's quality. Since the majority of silly Batman movies were made decades ago, their box office is likely much lower due to their age as a pose to their lack of quality.

IMDB Analysis

IMDB is a website where people rate and review movies that they watch. The source I used is a list of all batman movies ranked in different metrics. This list took a very liberal attitude towards what is considered a Batman movie, including films like Justice League, an ensemble movie, and Joker, which doesn't even include Batman himself. In my analysis, I only included movies where Batman is the central main character as well as non-animated movies, with the exception of The lego Batman Movie because of its popularity. Using these two criteria, I came to similar conclusions as to the box office analysis. Batman movies with a gritty tone were generally rated pretty high, with The Dark Knight coming in at a very impressive 9 out of 10 and its sequel an 8.4 out of 10. The highest-rated silly movie is The Lego Batman Movie, with a decent 7.3 out of 10. With the exception of The Lego Batman Movie, however, almost all silly Batman movies were panned by audience scores, with Batman Forever having a 5.4 out of 10 and Batman vs. Robin coming in at an absolutely pathetic 3.7 out of 10. Looking at audience scores, it is clear that Batman movies with a more severe tone are much more well-liked.

Rotten Tomato analysis

Rotten Tomatoes is a website where critics and audiences rate movies and tv shows. I will only look at critical reviews to contrast with the IMDB audience reviews for this analysis. The Dark Knight again ranks first in critical reviews with an excellent 94 percent; however, The silly Lego Batman Movie ranks just behind with a very impressive 90 percent. Unfourtnely, however, for the stupid movies, except for the Lego Batman Movie, almost all of them are critically panned, with Batman and Robin coming in again with a pathetic 13 percent. While the trend may seem clear, there are some issues with looking at Rotten Tomatoes. When looking at the box office, the numbers are objective and factual, but Rotten Tomatoes is based on the opinion of critics. IMDB has this same issue, but since its rankings are done by hundreds of thousands of people, I can at least see what most people think about a movie. The main issue with Rotten Tomatoes is that each film is only reviewed by a few hundred critics, which taints the results significantly. Due to the small sample size, the margin of error for people's rankings is much higher than the IMDB scores, which is important to take into consideration.

1 My First Recommendation is for websites like Box Office Mojo to account for inflation because some older Batman Movies made in the 1960s have much higher box office numbers after accounting for inflation

2 My second recommendation is that websites like IMDB create some sort of content moderation system to avoid people rating newer movies much higher due to recency bias.

3 My third recommendation is for the inclusion of graphs on all of the websites because it would make the data much easier to visualize.

4 My fourth recommendation is for Box Office Mojo to include further data about the time when a movie was made because for newer movies like "The Batman" (2022) its release during a pandemic likely hampers its box office success.

5 My fifth recommendation is for Rotten Tomatoes to expand the amount of critics which they allow to review movies because the amount which they have now is so low it creates a significant margin of error.

6 My sixth recommendation is for websites like IMDB to expand their information about the location of their audience. It would be interesting to see if there is any correlation between how people rate movies and where they are.

7 My final recommendation is that all of the websites should make a way to directly compare two movies. This would be really useful for me specifically because I could compare the highest and lowest preforming movies for each style.
