Day 1

We arrived in Malta on Sunday 16th. When we were at the airport of Roma Fiumicino I was very tired (it was 5 AM!). Everyone around me was as enthusiastic as me. I was very excited and as soon as we landed I was shivering and later on (as we landed) the adrenaline rush started to wear off. We were then brought to the hotel which was fancy and welcoming towards us. We were all really drained but delighted by the stunning view we could see from the hotel windows. In the evening we all reunited to sing and dance altogether. I will always remember this day as one of the most overwhelming days of my life.

Day 2

On Monday, we started our English lessons and we got to meet our teacher. Her name is Nicky and she’s half maltese and half english. She’s a lovely woman who has sympathized with me and Ludovica (she told us a lot about her adventurous and surprising life!). In the afternoon we went for a walk to visit the salinas right next to our hotel. We went birdwatching and we were taught by a guide how the Maltese population used to produce salt. In the evening we visited La Valletta.

Day 3

On Tuesday, I started to feel a bit weak because of the lack of coffee! (In Malta it wasn’t really good). The lessons continued and I was very happy because the weather was so sunny and during the breaks we all went to the hotel terrace to “tan” a bit. In the afternoon we visited La Valletta with a guide who showed us the beauties of this city, such as St John’s Cathedral, the Caravaggio paintings inside of it and the Auberge du Castille. In the evening we took part in a treasure hunt organized in our hotel.

Day 4

On Wednesday, the weather was amazing and I was feeling like I was starting to understand maltese people and their habits. In the afternoon we got to rest a bit and in the evening we were able to go bowling in Paceville, which is a district of St Julian’s (a maltese town), where we were eventually free to walk. I was particularly impressed by the lights and how futuristic this place looked like: there were a lot of skyscrapers and discos, a lot of young people and loud music. During this day I started to feel worn out and exhausted.

Day 5

On Thursday, during the lessons our abilities learned throughout the week, were tested during a test. I was tired but I managed to do it and I was a bit sad because I had to say goodbye to my beloved teacher, who has been also a guide (even for a small amount of time, I had grown fond of her). In the afternoon we went to Mdina and Rabat and visited these two special locations, in which the architecture was breathtaking and a symbol of the Spanish, Italian and Arab influences on Malta.

Day 6

On Friday, we had booked a complete day to explore the remaining beauties of Maltese island. We visited Had-Dingli (beautiful cliffs, from which you can see the sea), the Limestone Heritage and the Blue Grotto. We went on a boat to explore the caves of the coastline and it was wonderful! During lunch we went to Marsaxlokk, a small town, whose economy relies on fishing. In the evening we were able to visit Rabat again, and we got the chance to definitively say goodbye to this amazing location.

Day 7

On Saturday, the weather was amazing and we were free to shop at the Point Shopping Mall, where we spent our last morning in Malta. After lunch, we went to the airport where we were all unhappy and thinking about the memories made in the week that has just passed by.

Overall I’d describe this week as one of the most chaotic, memorable, funny, challenging, different, educational and iconic of my life. I am very grateful that I’ve been offered the opportunity to take part in this type of experience and I’ll never forget this.
