You try every trick in the book to be a better person. You walk your dog. You hug your mom. You call your dad every day at 5 because that’s when he gets off work. You stop yelling. You tweet as if your grandma followed you. You open up to your sister, even though it is 2 AM on a Wednesday night. You flick yourself on the arm every time you make another insensitive joke. You start to pray. You tell your best friend you love her, because she needs it more than you do. You try to kick old habits, even though they usually stay. You tell your friends you’re sorry when you just can’t seem to get out of a bad mood. You let someone else win the argument, because you would rather drop your pride than to ever drop them. You finally ask God for guidance, even though it might seem lik you are talking to the walls. You try it all, but some days are harder than others, and you think you’ve had enough. But in the end, you make it to the next day.

“You try every trick in the book to succeed in a life you desire.

You go to school. You take hard tests that don’t apply to what you want in life. You go through 3 levels of school to end up with ‘Now what?’. You pass your classes. You fail some tests. You lose some friends. You fight with your parents when your grade dropped from a 90% to an 89.97%. You give up when it’s 2:17 in the morning and you still don’t understand the term ‘abstemious’. You wake up with bags under your eyes. You go to school thinking about the weekend but it’s only a Tuesday at 8:05 am. You are pressured since Freshmen year in high school to stay in school and do your work. You are forced to conform to societal expectations that if you don’t get straight A’s then you aren’t going to college. You are given loads of homework and told college is worse than that-But a college student tells you otherwise! A college student has none!- and every hour you waste on the thousands of historical terms becomes an option. You are expected to apply, apply, apply and never have fun, have fun, have fun. You are overworked and provided with too much work. You don’t know if you’re going to succeed. You have no idea what you want to do for the rest of your life. You do everything they tell you, and suddenly it’s June and you still don’t know what is required to make a successful life. You consider not leaving the comfort of your room. You even try to tell your parents you’re not ready. But in the end you are.”

You try every trick in the book to have your parents get you a dog. You kindly ask your parents. You tell them how happy it will make you. You tell them that you will take good care of it. You get rejected. You start behaving more. You start helping around the house. You do you homework every night. You get good grades. You start hinting about the dog. You ask again. You get rejected again. You start complaining. You start explaining how responsible you are. You tell them all the things you will do. You still get the answer ‘no’. You start whining. You start crying. You start throwing a tantrum. You are grounded. You still don’t have a dog. You are done crying and you go down stairs. Your mom says ‘maybe when you're older’. You have hope for the future.

You try every trick in the book to meet the expectations placed on you. You do what you are told. You get the grades you are supposed to. You say “i can do better” even after you’ve done your best. You stress over the idea of failure. You stay up all night studying because you can’t afford to get anything less than a B. You make everything you do revolve around getting to where you want to go. You spent countless hours on homework instead of going out with your friends. You make sure that you don’t do anything that would ruin your “good kid” reputation. You concentrate your fleeting months of high school on getting into the college you are supposed to get into. You spend every free hour at tutoring so that your chances of getting what you want increase. You put so much pressure on yourself that you eventually wonder if you are doing the right thing. You can’t stand the thought of facing your parents if you don’t achieve your goal. You claim that you never stood a chance. You blame your teachers and the pressure- oh the pressure! You have done it all but that one day when you receive your letter from the college you’ve dreamed about you say, “What’s done is done”. You still feel you have not done enough. You open up the letter and find your answer. You did more than enough.

You try every trick in the book to not let anxiety take over. You take deep breaths. You count to ten. You try to surround yourself with positivity. You write entries in your journal disowning all your insecurities. You block the negative people phone numbers. You don’t hear their opinion and thoughts that bring you down. You stop crying. You stop caring. You realize actually having anxiety is a thing and you might have it. You blame yourself. You blame your family. You blame your past . You blame your current situation. You talk to your counselor. You accept what it is happening even though you don’t want it to. You explain to the people you blame how they make you feel. You start surrounding yourself with positivity like you always tried to. You claim that you claimed that you did have anxiety, you claimed that you were weak—It was the book! It was the pressure!—and every hour like clockwork you say that you’re so so sorry. You try it all, but one day it all comes back and you would say, No more, and, Ya, and you will have to talk to someone new and repeat all your worries. You consider not going. You consider to solve your worries on your own. In fact, you say won’t. But in the end you do.”

You don’t get 8 hours of sleep.

You wake up early to say good morning.

You say I love you first. You give them your full attention.

You bring up that topic they always avoid and you’re left on the ground wounded. You look in the mirror and can’t ignore the bruises or that forced smile.

You make them a priority.
You try every trick in the book to make your parents happy with your grades. You attend tutoring. You do all your homework. You study more. You make your curfew earlier. You tell your friends you can’t text as much anymore. You don't stay after practice to put in extra work for either sport. You blamed sports for taking your time but regret saying that. You blame ASB but they still rely on you. You blame your teacher. You stay strong and don’t switch out like the other 8 students. You attend tutoring with a new teacher. You write better and more efficient notes. You blame it on the stress and workload. You try to explain your situation as best as you can. You try to have them relate. You try it all, but they simply just don’t get it, the grind of being a student athlete that lives a positive lifestyle, drug-free and an easy going guy. You respect women when you can and will go beyond for others. You will simply have to accept the Low grade you have. You will have to accept the fact that your parents are hard on you for a reason, they want you to be the best version of yourself you can be. You have to realize this is an AP class to preparing you for college. You want to switch out or just give up and not care about the grade but your integrity doesn’t let you.

You try every trick in the book to please everyone. You make it work. You sacrifice your time, effort, and energy. You tell them what they want to hear. You be the person who they want you to be. You do whatever they ask, no matter the cost. You change your beliefs. You stop thinking for yourself. You start taking on too much. You claim you don’t mind doing it all. You blame yourself. You blame them. You blame the society that makes you feel as though you have to be this way. You blame your upbringing. You find ways to avoid your own responsibilities. You stay up late. You evolve, emotionally, mentally, in any way you know how to. You start to imitate those around you, to do what they do, and think what they think so they will be happy with who you are. You claim that you were young, you claim that you have changed - this is who I am now! This is who I want to be! —and day in and day out, you say it’s no problem at all, you’re sorry if you offended anyone, you’re sorry you couldn’t make it work. You try it all, but one day you wake up and realize that this isn’t the life you want to lead, that some things have to be about you. You consider living for yourself. You consider disregarding other people’s feelings. In fact, you say you’ll start putting yourself first. But in the end, you aren’t strong enough, and you know you’ll never change.

You start losing weight. You start noticing you don't have flabby arms and thighs. You start loving the progress of how your body looks. You start to get hungry. You see what there is on the fridge. You see leftover pizza. You convince yourself eating a slice of pizza won't affect you in a way or form, because your excuse is it's your cheat day. You prepare and eat the pizza. Then you start eating donuts. You start eating hamburgers with fries. You start drinking Coca-Cola instead of H2O. You slack on your daily runs at 5 am to sleep in more. You stop working out and replace it with a movie night eating popcorn and nachos. Why did You stop? You believe there are your cheat days. You go to the doctor for your check-up. You step on the weight scale, when you walk in the room. Your eyes cannot believe the number you saw that the scale gave you. You gained 30 pounds in just 4 days.

You try every trick in the book to please others. You wake up everyday, in the hopes of making a difference. You go out of your way to talk to people, who never notice you. You get your work done on time and let others copy it. You say yes every time you should say no. You pretend to be happy, so the people around you stay positive. You keep up your grades, you never come to school late. You tell them you got an A, and all they say is okay. You always reach a hand asking for help, but when it comes to you, the world becomes silent and you're left with yourself. When people are upset you feel like you're the problem. So, you look up ways to please them online. When all you have is one life, and one time to make it right. Why spend time pleasing others, when you yourself are like no other.

You apply for all the scholarship you can. You share your knowledge of colleges to your parents so they know you’re on the right track.
You try every trick in the book to stay committed. You change up your schedules. You lower the amount of food you eat. You download an app that reminds you to exercise every day. You try and exercise every night before you go to sleep. You refuse to drink anything other than water and if you run out, you would only take a small sip out of anything else. You continue to practice the dances you’ve learned. You make it a goal to not eat sweets or any other type of junk food for a month. You refuse to eat anything after 7pm, even if it causes your body to protest in response. You eat only salads during lunch. You look into the mirror and see no change so you try harder. Your portions become smaller. You check the labels of anything you’re about to eat before you eat it. You lack sleep. You feel different, lighter on your feet. You stop judging the way your body looks and focus on how it feels. You become more confident. You don’t stop though, because you know the goal you set for yourself is reachable. You know that if you continue on in a healthy way, that you will reach that goal. But of course, it will take all the effort in the world.

You try every trick in the book to keep it together. You ignore it. You listen to music. You tell yourself it’s ok. You go for walks. You focus on school work. You laugh. You talk to friends. You do well in school. You talk to family. You read. You hug your siblings. You write. You tell your siblings it’s ok. You tell yourself to be strong, to not worry. You play games. You participate in school clubs. You smile. You try to be positive. But that doesn’t change a thing, and it all comes crumbling down anyway.

You try every trick in the book to get a new phone. You beg your parents, you save your money, throw your phone against the wall. You get excited when your phone turns itself off, but then you push the power button, and it still works. Your calls stop working, but then that's only for a day. You stop receiving texts, but then they come flooding in an hour later. So you figure your phone never going to die, so you try to please your parents in every way possible. You take out the trash, wash their cars, clean the floors, clean the dishes, but nothing works. You give up and decide that you’ll never get a new phone.. which is fine?

You try every trick in the book to be patient. You go to the doctor. You receive prescriptions that “control” your mood. You begin to feel drowsy and just believe that you're sleepy or tired. You try to get along with your brother. You blame him for making you angry. You try new hobbies just to try and keep you busy. You start doing dance, cheer, draw to try and learn the patience you need. You get told by your doctor to ignore anything that makes you angry. You learn what it means to count to ten. You try everything and more that you are told, just to better yourself, but in the end, it wasn’t about you-it's your family.

You try every trick in the book to be a child of god. You promise to go to church. You attempt to pray. You claim to have relieved yourself of your sins. You know deep down you have second guessed yourself. You try to read the holy black book. You blame your friends. You blame everyone, except yourself. A holy person takes hard work. Which you do take the the time to accomplish. What you believe is your belief not your parents.

Your thoughts become one and come against you. You ask yourself is it worth it? Do I believe? Or are you in the beliefs of your family. You take control of your thoughts. You take the time to think. But time is the hardest to come by.
