On April 20, 1999, two students at Columbine High School in Littleton/Columbine, Colorado, shot and killed 13 people and wounded 20 more. At the time, it was the worst school shooting in US history. Many forms of adolescent culture and media were blamed in the aftermath of this event, e.g., the influence of violent video games and music on youth and the conception of a "Trenchcoat Mafia." Also following the shootings was the implementation of "zero-tolerance" policies and lockdown drills as similar tragedies continue to occur.
